Description

This is the cosiest scarf I've ever had. The main part is knitted in rib stitch, which eats up wool like nothing else, but that does make it super cosy. If you want to go easy on wool, just knit it in a straight stockinette stitch.

The hood is great for keeping warm and keeping your hair dry if it starts raining while out and you don't have an umbrella. The pockets are like mittens and keep your hands warm but can also hold your phone / bus pass etc.

Yarn
500g Rowan Cocoon in Lavender Ice. 80% Merino Wool, 20% Kid Mohair.

Gauge
15 sts and 15 rows= 8cm x 6cm in Stockinette Stitch.

1. Step 1

Step 1

To make the scarf:
CO 42 stitches.
Knit in rib stitch for 60".
BO.

Rib stitch:
Row 1: K2, P2 until the end of the row.
Row 2: P2, K2 until the end of the row.

2. Step 2

Step 2

To make the pockets
CO 30 stitches & leave a long tail.
Knit in stockinette stitch for 9".
BO and leave a long tail.

Make two of these.

Use the tails to sew the pockets on to the bottoms of the insides of the scarf. You want the pocket openings to be at the back of the scarf, so that you can slip your hands in from behind. Leave a 5 1/2" opening for your hands and stitch the rest in place.

3. Step 3

Step 3

To make the hood:

Left side:
CO 45 stitches and leave a long tail.
Knit in stockinette stitch for 40 rows.
Row 41 - Decrease by 2 at the start of the row.
Row 43 - Decrease by 1 at the start of the row.
Row 45 - Decrease by 2 at the start of the row.
Row 47 - Decrease by 1 at the start of the row.
Row 49 - Decrease by 2 at the start of the row.
Row 51 - Decrease by 1 at the start of the row.
Row 53 - Decrease by 2 at the start of the row.
Row 55 - Decrease by 1 at the start of the row.
Row 57 - Decrease by 2 at the start of the row.
Row 59 - Decrease by 1 at the start of the row.

Knit one more row and bind off, leaving a long tail.

Right side:
CO 45 stitches and leave a long tail.
Knit in stockinette stitch for 40 rows.
Row 41 - Decrease by 2 at the end of the row.
Row 43 - Decrease by 1 at the end of the row.
Row 45 - Decrease by 2 at the end of the row.
Row 47 - Decrease by 1 at the end of the row.
Row 49 - Decrease by 2 at the end of the row.
Row 51 - Decrease by 1 at the end of the row.
Row 53 - Decrease by 2 at the end of the row.
Row 55 - Decrease by 1 at the end of the row.
Row 57 - Decrease by 2 at the end of the row.
Row 59 - Decrease by 1 at the end of the row.

Knit one more row and bind off, leaving a long tail.

4. Step 4

Step 4

Sew the two hood pieces together. You want to have the side that the knit rolls on at the outside, so that it sits on your head nicely. So stitch together with the wrong side facing out, using the yarn tails to sew.

Fold your scarf in half to find the middle, pin the hood in place and sew on to the scarf using a lose tail.

5. Step 5

Step 5

To make the ears:

CO 15 stitches and leave a long tail.
Knit in stockinette stitch for 4 rows.
Row 5 - Decrease by one at the start and end of the row.
Row 6 - Pearl until end of row.
Repeat this pattern, decreasing at either end on every knit row, until you're left with one stitch on the needle.
BO.

(Make two of these).

To make the ear inners:
Using the pink yarn, CO 12 stitches, leaving a long tail.
Knit in stockinette stitch for 4 rows.
Row 5 - Decrease by one at the start and end of the row.
Row 6 - Pearl until end of row.
Repeat this pattern, decreasing at either end on every knit row, until you're left with one stitch on the needle.
BO.

6. Step 6

Step 6

Sew the inner ear on to the main ear part, using the pink yarn tail.

7. Step 7

Step 7

Finally, pin the ears on the hood where you like them and sew in place using the loose tails.

8. Step 8

Step 8

All done, now you can keep cosy through the cold weather!

I'm pretty sure I'm going to sound dense when I ask this question, but, here goes. What do we do for the even rows on #3? Are we supposed to just knit a stockinette row? If it was stated, I can't find it. I'd really appreciate some help. Thanks \m/

Ok, I've officially decided 32 stitches on 6mm Needles (the math actually seems to be 31.5 but...)
using Stockingette stitch ...Wish me luck! I'll be sure to post a version when Finished :)

So I tried using Math to figure out how many stitches I'd need to cast on using 6.0 mm needles ... but can't figure it out.. anyone know?

That is so cool, Cat. Too bad I can't knit. Maybe I could take the idea and make it with polar fleece.

Just finished making my version of this :) It is a heck of a lot of knitting because I used small needles but it turned out great. Thanks for the great tutorial!

Also, I got some pink felt, cut it into a cat paw shape and sewed it onto the bottom of the pockets for even more cuteness :)
