Making a notebook Japanese stylee
 <  Image 1 of 4  >

I found the instructions for this in an old copy of Craft: magazine. I used different kinds of pages cos I had a sketchbook that was dropping to pieces and some old letter writing stationery etc so I stitched em together to make a notebook.

Soz if a couple of the pics are a bit fuzzy, it's kind of hard taking pics of myself with a phone lol.

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

    Get all your stuff together.
The large cup of tea is optional;)

  2. Step 2

    Step 2

Cut out your covers, these are 6.5" by 7.5".
Score a line 1" in and fold to make the cover 5.5" by 7.5".
Traditionally you would just leave it like that but I'm too anal to have flaps flapping about so I stuck mine down with DST:)

  3. Step 3

    Step 3

Cut your pages 5" by 7.5", don't cut too many unless you have phenomenal upper body strength for piercing them (I'm talking Isis the Amazon strength not "I can hold upward facing dog" for 6 breaths strength lol)

  4. Step 4

    Step 4

This is the diagram for the holes (it's from Craft: magazine, credit where it's due;])
Each one has several numbers, that will become clear when we are stitching.
I made a card template the same size as my cover and marked the hole positions on. They should be as follows:
Top and bottom holes are 3/8" from the top and bottom edges and 3/8" from the spine.
The four middle holes are 3/4" from the spine and roughly 1.25" from each other. Just spread em evenly:)

  5. Step 5

    Step 5

Using your clamps or bulldog clips clamp the book and your template together.

  6. Step 6

    Step 6

Put a mat underneath (I'm using an old mouse mat) and pierce the holes right through the whole thing. This is where your upper body strength comes in;)
Remove template but keep clamps in place.

  7. Step 7

    Step 7

Cut your thread to about five times the spine length and starting on the back sew through hole 1 (see above diagram) leaving a tail about 4" long.
Wrap the thread round the spine and come through the same hole which is now #2 on the diagram.

  8. Step 8

    Step 8

Sew through hole 3 wrap the spine and go through 4 (ie the same hole).
Sew through hole 5, wrap the spine and go through hole 6.
Honestly if you refer to the diagram it's simple:)

  9. Step 9

    Step 9

Sew through hole 7, wrap the spine and go through hole 8.
Wrap the bottom and go through hole 9.
Sew through hole 10, wrap the bottom and go through hole 11.
Sew through hole 12, hole 13 and hole 14, wrap the spine and go through at hole 15.
Sew through hole 16, wrap the spine and go through hole 17. Wrap around the top edge of the book and sew through hole 18.
Sew through hole 19, wrap the top edge and go through hole 20.

  10. Step 10

    Step 10

Thread the needle with the tail you left at the beginning so both ends are through the needle.

  11. Step 11

    Step 11

Sew through hole 21, but don't go all the way through the book, just about half way.
Tie the ends very tightly and cut to about 1".

  12. Step 12

    Step 12

    And you're done tada!
If you google Jpanese Stab Binding there are different patterns to stitch to make the binding more decorative.
