Description

Made this for a pal of mine, much to his great pleasure. If the outside didn't make it good enough, the rainbow interior definitely had him sold!

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven to 350F degrees.

  2. Grease pan. Line the bottom with paper or dust lightly with flour to prevent the cake from sticking once baked.

  3. In a bowl, cream - 1/2 cup shortening* Gradually blend in 3/4 cup sugar. Beat until light and fluffy. * If you aren't a fan of baking with shortening, you can substitute this with butter. I prefer butter, personally. Shortening tends to have a fraudulent taste.

  4. Add 2 well beaten eggs and 1 teaspoon of vanilla to the mix, and beat until well combined.

  5. Blend or sift together 1 3/4 cups of all purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar 1/2 teaspoon salt Add this mix of dry ingredients to the mixture, alternately with 2/3 cup of milk, mixing after each addition.

  6. THIS STEP IS OPTIONAL. If you don't want a rainbow cake, go on to step seven. Pour batter into your preferred number of bowls, dividing as you wish. Use your food coloring to get each one to your desired shade of coloring.

Pour your mix[es] into your baking pan, and pop it into the oven for 30-45 minutes, depending on your oven. When a toothpick or cake tester comes out clean when poked into the center, you know its finished. Allow to cool.

Now, before you begin icing the cake, it's much easier to do this step first so its all ready when the cake is. As your cake is cooling, melt down some chocolate[chips, bar, no matter!]. When its melted, put it in either a piping bag with a small end, or scoop it into a sandwich bag like I did and snip a SMALL piece off the end of the corner of it. It makes a great easy DIY piping bag! Take this time to make the eyes and mouth of Jack Skellington. Pop it in the fridge or freezer to harden. I made my mouth a little too thin so it did crack in half, but you couldn't notice with a little repositioning.

    Ice that cake!

Take your face pieces out of the fridge/freezer, and position them on the cake. And you're done! chomp down, give it to a friend, or let it sit in your fridge for admiring eyes until you toss er out. I don't recommend wasting food though, so maybe you should just admire it while cutting it into pieces. Enjoy!
