How To Sew A Lettuce Hem

  • Completed Project: How To Sew A Lettuce Hem Picture #1

Add a natural frill to boring hems and edges!

Through aggravating trial-and-error with my sewing machine, I have accomplished the lettuce hem technique - and you can too. :] No special pressure foots required!

This technique may be annoying to achieve at first, but once you get the hang of it, you can't stop. XD This technique works great on hard to hem fabrics and fabrics that fray easily, like chiffon.

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

Adjust stitch options to the smallest zigzag stitch.

  2. Step 2

    Step 2

Adjust stitch length to shortest length. I set mine between "0" and "1".

  3. Step 3

    Step 3

Begin to sew right next to the edge of the fabric (if the fabric is fraying, begin sewing below the fray line, not on top of it). As you sew, stretch both sides of the fabric. The fabric will begin to frill.

  4. Step 4

    Step 4

Snip away excess fray from the top.

  5. Step 5

    Step 5

Make drab hems look frilly and girly.
