  • How to make a patchwork quilt. How To Quilt - Step 1
    Step 1

Cut out your templates, you'll need shapes that fit together perfectly. These include; squares, hexagons, equalatral triangles(all sides are the same length) and diamonds

Card or thick paper workes well, you don't want anything to thick because it will be difficult to sew into.

    Step 2

Next cut your fabric, you'll need to cut it bigger than your template so you have spare fabric to over lap the back

Tack this in place and repeat with your other templates

  • How to make a patchwork quilt. How To Quilt - Step 3
    Step 3

Place your shapes right side together(so the pattered sides are touching, then sew along one side, making sure the shapes match up perfectly and you don't sew through the card

    Step 4

Repeat with the rest of your patches. I sewed in the dirrection of the yellow line, just so i didn't have to cut my thread

    Step 5

    REMEMBER RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER

  • How to make a patchwork quilt. How To Quilt - Step 7
    Step 6

Once all your pieces are connected on at least one side you can sew the other sides together, hold the edges together so the tips meet.

After that and once your happy their held together firmly, you can cut the tacking lines and remove the card

Sew this onto some plain fabric and your done.

  • Step 7

Patchwork is great for making blancked and bags.

You can use scraps of fabric that means something to you. Make a timeline of your life by using baby clothes, your first blacket or a jumper that doesn't fit anymore.

It's a good way of keeping memories with out taking up to much space.

I'm a quilter too and have wanted to make one with the hexagons but not experienced enough for the Y seams. Though your How to made it look easy. I'll have to give it a try, thank you.
