This heart pillow project is a twist on a standard Valentine's gift.
Customize this project with your own cute typography, and add embellishments to make it unique! I added some strips to make the heart look like a tush, my husband got a laugh when I gave it to him! Pillows are a simple project to sew, and this pillow will be a memorable gift to share on Valentine's Day.

  • How to make a shaped cushion. Heart Pillow Valentine's Project - Step 1
    Step 1

Start with two pieces of fabric that are approximately the same size for the pillow front and back. Press the fabrics, and also iron another matching fabric for the applique letters.

    Step 2

Take the two pieces of fabric for the pillow front and back and lay them on a flat surface, right sides together. Fold the fabric in the middle and check that the pieces are laying flat. When I did this there was some bunching in the area of the fold, so make sure everything is smooth. Draw half of a heart shape along the fold line.

Cut out the pieces, you may want to pin the layers of fabric together first to be sure that the two pieces don't shift while cutting. Also prepare three strips of fabric if you are adding them. Mine were about 2 1/2 inches wide.

    Step 4

Pin the strips of fabric on one side of the pillow and using a zig zag stitch or other decorative stitch, sew along the edges.

    Step 5

Draw your lettering on the contrast fabric, I drew the letters on the back of the fabric and then realized that they would be reverse when turned over. So be sure to draw the letters on the side that you want to show on the pillow front. Applique the letters onto the front. I pinned each letter with one pin, and slowly zig zag stitched around the edges. (If you have stitch witchery or fusible web, use it on the letters and the whole applique process will be a lot easier.) Then pin the two heart shapes together, wrong sides together and sew with a half inch seam. Leave a four to five inch opening along one edge of the pillow so that you can turn it right side out. Either zig zag stitch the edges or use pinking shears to trim the edges along the seam so that the fabric doesn't ravel. Then flip the pillow, stuff with fiberfill, and close the opening with a zig zag stitch.

Next pin the two heart shapes together, wrong sides together and sew with a half inch seam. And there you go, a memorable meaningful gift for your love on Valentine's Day.
