Halawa/Egyptian Sugar Wax

  • Completed Project: Halawa/Egyptian Sugar Wax Picture #1

Easy eco-friendly hair removal. =]

I got fed up with throwing out razors and using waxes with a high concentration of chemicals in them, and since I'm a little short on cash booking a Sugaring appointment at a salon is out. I personally use this on my legs only, but you can pretty well go crazy with where you wax, so long as your pain tolerance permits. ;)

Sorry about the lack of photos.

  1. Step 1

Assemble your ingredients. Make sure you have a pretty big pot so the mix doesn't boil over and on to the stove, that's a real pain.

  2. Step 2

Put everything into the pot, mix it up, and throw it on a burner on high heat.

  3. Step 3

Stir often. Make sure you keep a close eye on this, when sugar starts to boil, it boils fast. At about the time everything starts boiling throw the candy thermometer in there to keep an eye on the temperature. You'll be cooking it to about 250 degrees, or the hardball candy stage.

  4. Step 4

Once the mix has hit 250 degrees take it off the heat and let it cool just a little bit. Then pour it into a microwave safe container, and let it cool some more.

Once it's cooled to your liking, it takes about 45 minutes for mine to cool enough (Make sure you check just a drop on the plam of your hand before you cover yourself in it), slather it on and get waxing, but you know, if you decide to back out at the last minute you can always just eat this like a candy. Mmm lemon sugar.

Hope someone found this useful, or at least interesting.

Heya, your idea sounds really great! I'm definitely going to try it out.

I've never heard of sugaring though...how much of it are you supposed to use? And do you let it just cool and harden on your skin and rip it off like wax? Also, is it more like soft or hard wax?

Thanks! =]

Just use enough to cover your legs in a thin layer of wax. I don't know if you're supposed to let the wax harden onto your legs but I think that makes it a major pain in the rear end. As for the soft or hard wax bit, I'm not really sure, you don't want syrup, haha. I hope I helped. =]

sounds like a cool idea. I've never wanted to invest on wax bands or expensive treatments and I'm really getting tired to nasty razors myself

this might help with at least SOME questions...

i'm glad you posted your own here! it's hard to ask questions to a mysterious writer on the internet, much easier in our little community.

@ Katia Ruby - thanks!

So I tried this out yesterday! It worked really great on places where I have thicker hair (like on my legs), but I have really thin wispy hair on my arms, so it didn't work as well there...it just ripped some hairs out, broke some, and didn't work on the rest.
Overall, it's great though! So easy to make and cheap too ^-^

I really want to try this, but I don't have lemon juice, is it necessary or can I skip it?

@ Scarlet: Glad it worked for you. :)

@Leslie M.: You could probably skip the lemon juice if you don't have any handy, just replace it with water. No promises that it would work that way but I suppose it would be worth a shot. :) Good luck,

how effective is this comparing to regular/microwave wax?

I'm not too sure about that, I've only ever bought Alexandria sugar wax, which is basically the same thing, only it's a little less viscous, and after you reheat this stuff a bit it works exactly the same.
