A ribbon based hat/fascinator.
The method of making ribbon flowers and bows is quite basic and there are loads of how-tos about the web.
I decided to make a big one, layer it and create a little hat thing! Great fun, quick and much cheaper than a boring high street fascinator.
Now I've made one I might make different themes (nautical with an anchor in, halloween with a pumpkin in the centre etc') - the only new things you need once you've made one (assuming you have felt left) are ribbon scraps and the centre.

Step 1First, here are the items you'll need (in case they are called different things in different places).
Note you need 2-3 colours of ribbon. I ended up using only 2. Also, a variety of thicknesses adds interest- this is an ideal project for using scraps.

Step 2You need to cut lengths of your biggest ribbon TWICE as long as you want each petal.
I cut 5- if you want a ruffly rosette, do more, if something simple, do less.

Step 3Create 'loops' with some shape to them (do this by folding each section in half, then turning over the top layer and pinch- you get a loop with a bit of shape to it.
Thread a needle, knot the thread. Spear each 'petal' on and it will hold it correctly.

Step 4When you have done all 5, fan the petals out as you would like them and fix with a stitch.

Step 5Create a smaller version in contrasting ribbon, and stitch to the middle of the big one.
Repeat at you wish.
Finish with a simple 'loop' to cover all the stitches, in the middle.

Step 6Cut a 'base' from your felt. Made 2 roughly the same. The scruffy one here is the 'base'- it will not be seen when the clip is worn.
Glue the front piece of felt to the top of the alligator clip. Use plenty of glue but be careful not to seal the clip shut!
Then, open the clip and stick the bottom shape of felt under the top 'jaw' of the clip (metal to felt), and then put glue all around inside between the 2 felt layers- so basically the felt is sealed on to the clip and you can still open/shut the clip.

Step 7Glue your rosette to your felt where you'd like it.
You can see from the step above I did it the other way round. To be honest it works either way.

Step 8I added (using glue- it was hidden under the rosette) 3 neat hanging-down ribbons for decorations- buttons, jewels, feathers could also be used.
Add a vintage button in the centre of the rosette (again, neatly glued).
