Furoshiki For Books

  • Completed Project: Furoshiki For Books Picture #1

Carry books in style!

Furoshiki is the Japanese art of folding fabric - primarily to carry objects such as a bottle or bento box, or to wrap a gift. To learn how to wrap just about anything that will hold still go to furoshiki.com and see what Japan's Department of the Environment has to say on the matter!

This one's my favorite. Carry your beach reading in the cutest little handbag!

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

Start with a square of fabric large enough to go around both books twice.

  2. Step 2

    Step 2

Lay your books toward two of the corners, and fold those corners up and over each book. Tuck the tails in under the books for neatness and stability. Ignore my knee, again.

  3. Step 3

    Step 3

Flip each book in toward the center. If the books are small or the fabric is large you can put an extra flip in. You just need a little space between them.

  4. Step 4

    Step 4

pull the two remaining corners across the gap to the opposite sides. It'll be loose, don't worry.

  5. Step 5

    Step 5

Here comes the magic! Flip the two books together, like you're closing one big book. You can see that my tails are uneven here - and that's not a big deal.

  6. Step 6

    Step 6

wind the tails up a little and tie a square knot at the tips. Tada! You have a supercute handbag that's actually your trashy novels or nursing reference books!
