Here is a really cool how-to on making groovy foam core jewlery. This project is interesting and different, in that it combines rubber stamping, decoupage, and jewelry design into one. Not only that-- no one will suspect that it is made out of what science class students normally use for presentations of the cicada's life cycle! This stuff is really so versatile and lightweight, plus you can paint it, add glitter, rhinestones, sequins, decoupage, rubber stamp, whatever you wish to add decorative flair! In this project, I will be using rubber stamped tissue paper and Mod Podge to decoupage the foam core pieces.

First things first; gather up your supplies. In addition to the foam core, you will need colored tissue paper, rubber stamps and stamp pads, Mod Podge decoupage medium or any good paper glue that will dry clear, jewelry tools, jewelry glue such as G-S Hypo Cement, eyepins, and earring findings of your choice.

Cut the foam core into the desired shapes with either an X-acto knife or scissors if you find them easier to use. Set these aside. Flatten out the tissue paper and stamp your chosen image randomly onto the tissue. I used a Celtic knotwork design on sky blue tissue. This is where you can get ultra-creative and use stamp pads of contrasting colors or word stamps to add pizzazz. OK, I just wanted an excuse to use the word "pizzazz".

Carefully tear the tissue around the stamped designs into pieces and decoupage them onto the foam core pieces with the Mod Podge. You can add multiple layers if you wish, letting the pieces dry in between layers. Embellish at will with beads, bullion beads, glitter, sequins, whatever strikes your fancy.

Grab your eyepins and tools. Depending on how large your cut your foam core pieces, you may want to trim the eyepins with wire nippers. Coat the straight part of the eyepin with the Hypo Cement and pierce the foam piece, pushing the eyepin into it until just the round "eye" part is showing. Attach your earring findings onto the eyepin. You can add beaded dangles for a nice touch if you like.
