Instructions

  1. Step 1 1

    Rubber ring
    Using yellow yarn, cast on 14 sts.
    *Work 4 rows in SS.
    Next row: (RS): K10, w&t.
    Next row: P6, w&t.
    Next row: knit to end of row.
    Purl 1 row.*
    Rep from * to * until ring is long enough to fit over the meerkat’s head and arms. Cast off.
    Duck’s head
    Using yellow yarn, cast on 8 sts and work 2 rows in SS.
    *Next row: K1, M1, knit to last st, M1, K1 [10 sts].
    Purl 1 row.
    Rep last 2 rows once more [12 sts].
    Next row: K2tog, knit to last 3 sts, ssk, K1 [10 sts].
    Purl 1 row.
    Rep these 2 rows once more [8 sts].*
    Rep from * to * for other side of head.
    Cast off.

  2. 2

    Duck’s beak
    Using orange yarn, cast on 4 sts and work 4 rows in GS.
    Next row: K1, K2tog, K1 [3 sts].
    Knit 1 row.
    Cast off.

  3. 3

    Duck’s tail
    Using yellow yarn, cast on 4 sts and work 2 rows in SS.
    Next row: K1, M1, knit to last st, M1, K1 [6 sts].
    Purl 1 row.
    Rep these 2 rows once more [8 sts].
    Next row: K1, K2tog, knit to last 3 sts, ssk, K1 [6 sts].
    Purl 1 row.
    Rep last 2 rows once more [4 sts].
    Work 2 rows in SS and cast off.

  4. 4

    Flippers (make two)
    Using orange yarn, cast on 4 sts and work 2 rows in GS.
    Next row: K1, M1, knit to last st, M1, K1 [6 sts].
    Work 9 rows in GS.
    Next row: K1, M1, knit to last st, M1, K1 [8 sts].
    Knit 2 rows.
    Rep last 3 rows twice more [12 sts].
    Work 10 rows in GS.
    Next row: K2tog at each end of row [10 sts]. Cast off.
    To make straps for flippers, cast on 4 sts and work 12 rows in GS. Cast off.

    Making up
    Sew swimsuit together as for ballerina’s leotard (page 25). Sew inside edge of rubber ring, stuffing as you go. Sew cast-on and cast-off ends together.
    Sew front and back seams of duck’s head, stuffing gently, and attach to front of rubber ring. Sew beak in place and embroider eyes, using picture for guidance. Sew seams on duck’s tail, stuff and attach to back of ring.
    Sew straps on to flippers.
