Turn your boring flip flops into cute embellished wrap sandals!!
I've had this pair of flip flops for a bout three years. I've only worn them a couple of times. After transforming them into a pair of embellished sandals I know they'll be my new go-to sandals this summer.

You can use an old pair that you have in the back of your closet or, get a cheap o pair from the store. Gather up your scraps from past projects and let's get to work!! (^_^)

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Flip Flop To Sandal Refashion - Step 1
    Step 1

Remove the straps from your sandals. Use the holes where the straps were to make a triangle shaped template.

Compare it to your foot to make sure it lines up just right. The triangle doesn't have to be perfect.

    Step 2

Trace and cut around the template. Be sure to give yourself 1/4" seam allowance.
Flip the template over and repeat for the opposite foot.

You'll need 2 for each foot.

Put those pieces aside for now

Next, we have to make the toe thong...

Cut a strip that is at least 1" wide and 4-6" long.

Fold and press the edges in towards the center.

Next, fold the entire strip in half and press. Top stitch the sides together.

    Step 4

Sandwich the small strip between the two triangle with the strip sticking out of the tip that will go between your toes and pin.

Sew around the left and right sides of the triangle leaving the end that goes at the top of your foot open

    Step 5

Trim the corners and turn the triangle right side out.

Press it flat and top stitch around the edge with a 1/8" seam allowance.

    Step 6

    For the ankle strap...

You'll need to cut a strip that is 1 1/2" wide and at least 40" long. You may have to sew several strips together.

Fold & press the strip just as you did the previous strips so the strip is about 1/2" wide.

    Don't sew it just yet!!

Note: You could also skip this step and use 1/4" - 1/2" wide ribbon.

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Flip Flop To Sandal Refashion - Step 7
    Step 7

Lay your super long strip out and determine where the middle of that strip is.

Sandwich the raw edge of the triangle between the folded edges of the long strip and pin in place.

Sew the strip with 1/8" seam allowance.

This is what you should have

    Step 9

Decorate and embellish the triangle part of your sandals.

You can glue rhinestones, apply studs, or sew beads. I bet glitter would be cute too!!

After it's decorated set it aside.

    Step 10

Now we have to make the side straps...

Cut four strips that are at least 1 1/2" wide and 5" long

Fold the edges in and press.

Next, fold the entire strip in half. Press and sew the same way you created the toe thong.

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Flip Flop To Sandal Refashion - Step 11
    Step 11

Fold one end over about an inch and stitch it down. This will create a loop to hold the strap.

You'll need to create two for each shoe.

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Flip Flop To Sandal Refashion - Step 12
    Step 12

    Grab your flip flops....

Some flip flops have holes in them from where the straps were. If your flip flops don't have holes, carefully poke holes where the straps were.

Cut a layer out around the holes taking care not to widen the hole too much. This will give the knots we'll create later a place to rest.

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Flip Flop To Sandal Refashion - Step 13
    Step 13

    Let's put it all together...

Thread the toe thong through the hole at the top of your sandal.

Thread one side strap through each side hole.

Note: I used a screwdriver to force the fabric through the hole. When doing this, be careful. (^_^)

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Flip Flop To Sandal Refashion - Step 14
    Step 14

Flip the sandal over and knot the fabric on the bottom.

It helps to try the sandal on first to make sure everything fits ok.

Pull the knot as tight as you can and make sure it is snug against the hole opening. Trim the excess fabric away from the knot

A dab of glue is optional to make sure it stays in place.

    Step 15

Put your sandals on, thread the long strap trough the side straps, tie them up, and rock your cute new sandals!!!

Is the knot on the bottom of the flip flop painful to walk on?
