Composition book slipcover

This is a notebook cover I made out of different colors of felt. I chose houndstooth, black and white, but you could choose any colors or patterns you prefer. The cover fits any standard composistion book, and is removable. I did wing it, and made up stuff as I went, so there are no templates. If anything's unclear, don't hesitate to ask for help. The instructions look long, but most of it is me giving extra pictures just to help.

Instructions

  1. Step 1 1

First, get all your stuff together.

  2. Step 2 2

First, I made the spine of my cover from black felt. Lay the book on the felt with 1.5 inches on the bottom. Then cut the felt about 1.5 inches away from the spine of the book. Don't worry about the length, the extra will be taken care of.

  3. Step 3 3

How the felt spine will look when folded over the spine of the book.

  4. Step 4 4

Next, use the felt of choice for the outside and main color of the cover to trace around the book's front cover, leaving a 1 inch allowance.

  5. Step 5 5

    Repeat with the back cover.

  6. Step 6 6

Lay the outisde cover pieces on the felt spine.

  7. Step 7 7

Sew the outside covers to the bottom of the spine. Repeat with the top, leaving a .5 inch allowance at each end.

  8. Step 8 8

Cut the spine so that the slit comes up to the book. Repeat at the top. From this point on, it's important to keep the book exactly in posistion so the finished cover fits properly.

  9. Step 9 9

Next, cut off each of the corners on the outside flap.

  10. Step 10 10

Sew squares of black cloth to each corner of the outside flaps.

  11. Step 11 11

Lay the book back on the cover. Make sure it fits the cuts made in the spine properly.

  12. Step 12 12

Cut a piece of felt for the inside cover almost as large as the book's cover.

  13. Step 13 13

You can use anything to secure the outside cover to the inside cover. I used tape simply because it was handy and easier to remove than safety pins. Sew the covers together.

  14. Step 14 14

Repeat step 15 for the other inside cover.

  15. Step 15 15

This is what the whole cover looks like with both inside covers attatched.

  16. Step 16 16

Next, sew the covers to the spine lengthwise. Be sure to reinforce it well.

  17. Step 17 17

Next, sew a ribbon to the spine between the two covers. Tie a charm to the end of the ribbon to complete your bookmark.

  18. Step 18 18

    Finished!
