Use simple household items to make your bare-bulb dining room into a lovely sitting area complete with "shell" light fixture.

  • Step 1

Using the bottom of a bowl/cup/what-have-you that is approximately 3 inches in diameter, trace circles onto your wax paper. For my small light, I needed about 100 circles; obviously you would need more for a bigger light/more strands/etc.

  • Step 2

Stack two of the circles on top of each other- it's okay if they aren't perfectly even- neither are shells! Place your iron (on an ironing board, on course)on top of the wax paper circles for about 20 seconds. Carefully peel the circles off of the iron (I used a credit card to do this) and allow them to cool.

  • Step 3

After you have fused all of your circles together, which lends them a little more strength, weight, and opacity, use a sewing machine to sew a straight stitch through the circles. This is when you decide how long your strands will be.

  • Step 4

Use the loose threads from each stitched strand to tie the strands around your bulb. Or use tape- we're not fancy here.

  • Step 5

Flip on your light and enjoy the ambiance!
