Great alternative to disposable plastic loot bags.

These were a first attempt at making party (loot) bags for my daughters Birthday. I'm a sewing beginner so they're probably not technically right but they work :-) This is all pretty basic, but I could have used with instructions myself so I hope they help someone else. I used a cheap polycotton material and 1 inch wide ribbon.

Description

These were a first attempt at making party (loot) bags for my daughters Birthday. I'm a sewing beginner so they're probably not technically right but they work :-) This is all pretty basic, but I could have used with instructions myself so I hope they help someone else. I used a cheap polycotton material and 1 inch wide ribbon.

Instructions

  1. Small dsc 0801 1297291122

Cut two pieces of fabric to a little more than the size you need the finished bag to be. Out of laziness I cut the fabric as one long strip to fold in half so I didn't need to sew the bottom edge. This strip is about 60cm x 23cm and the finished bag is about 26cm x 20cm.

  2. Small dsc 0802 1297290185

Iron the top edges of the pieces over to the inside to make a hem. I turned over by 1cm then by another 2cm or so and pressed.

  3. Small dsc 0808 1297290417

Stitch a piece of ribbon onto the right side of one of the pieces, quite near the top. I used 40cm of ribbon but you would need a longer piece if you wanted to tie a proper bow. I stitched it in two places with a gap in between to form a loop to have a space to hang a name tag from.

  4. Small dsc 0809 1297290449

Stitch the hems you ironed in down.

  5. Small dsc 0810 1297290515

Stitch the edges, right sides together. Mine aren't neat at all but it doesn't show in the finished item.

  6. Small dsc 0811 1297290694

I made a gusseted bag by stitching the corners. Pinch a corner across the base of the bag to make it 3D. It's hard to explain, I hope the pictures make sense.

  7. Small dsc 0812 1297290732

Stitch the corner. I stitched it 4cm in from the corner which makes quite a wide base bag.

    ta dah! All done.
