Just thought I'd get the embroidered part up as a seperate how-to as my sewing machine is being serviced and I can't get on with the rest of the bag yet :(
If you google search embroidery stitches there a few good sites with summaries (too numerous to mention).
This will eventually be a present for a friend.

Print out or photocopy the design of your choice, and cut out the shape.

Pin to your fabric, and tack a contrasting guideline around the shape with a large running stitch.

Remove the picture. I sewed the design freehand, but you could use the fabric printing tutorial by Cat Morley to print a reversed picture directly onto the fabric as a guide.

Use your imagination! I used an adapted 'lazy-daisy' stitch for the feathers, a combination of outline stitch and whipped runnning stitch for outline, and couching for the hair.

You don't have to be an experienced seamstress - I hadn't done any decorative embroidery since I was a child.

This turned out so well. I am very impressed! I did it as a child as well and am finding much relaxation from doing it again!
