Love american apparel v-necks but can't afford the price?
So I really wanted some of the lovely colourful v-necks that they sell at american apparel but at 24 bucks a pop I really can't afford it. Enter men's undershirts and clothing dye. I bought a 3 pack of Hanes v-necks from Wal Mart and away I go. Before I dyed the shirts I took them in a bit around the waist( wal mart didn't have any smalls so I had to buy the mediums). Also there are no pictures of the process but it is pretty easy.

  • Step 1

Take in the shirt you want to dye (if too large). This is done best by tracing the shape of a shirt that fits really well onto the shirt you want to take in and then sew along the lines.

  • Step 2

Prepare dye according to instructions. Usually this requires mixing the dye powder with really hot water in a big pot or other container( I would use and old pot as the dye may stain the pot as it did to me). I used the whole package for 1 shirt because I wanted the colour to be really bright.

  • Step 3

Wet shirt and place in dye water. I stirred the t-shirt in the pot to make sure the whole tshirt got dyed. Leave it in for 30 minutes.

  • Step 4

30 minutes later.... remove the shirt from the dye water and rinse in cold water until rinse water runs clear. Hang shirt up to dry.

  • Step 5

Once shirt is dry you are done. Ta da. Wear your colourful shirt with pride. For the first couple of washes I would definitely wash it with like colours especially if you dye your shirt shades of red and blue. From previous experience these shades tend to bleed.
