Livvi's coat of many colours
I have never liked any sort of clothing on pets...I have found it a little yuppie-like and kitsch hehe!

But on recent weeks it has been very cold here and my dog livvi lives outside, so I figured I should make her a coat...purely for warmth reasons and not yuppie reasons haha!

I found all these patterns for making dog coats on then the net but they were a little complex for me and I already kinda had my own idea in my head which didnt fit these other patterns. So i made my own, it is soo simple and fun to make(especially if you use fun material)!

Anyway im so happy with how it turned out (it is much better than i thought) and does look pretty cute on her =P

  • How to make a dog outfit. Dog Coat - Step 1
    Step 1

Gather your materials. The polar fleece I bought at spotlight on sale...$2 for the black and $4 for the rainbow (1 meter of each) and I used less than half of each....so i can easily make another, when livvi stinks this one up! haha!

  • How to make a dog outfit. Dog Coat - Step 2
    Step 2

measure your material, for my measurements i basicallr draped it over livvi and estimatedd. It was roughly 27 inches x 24 inches (including seams)

  • How to make a dog outfit. Dog Coat - Step 3
    Step 3

Cut the material making sure the two pieces (inside and outside) are the same size

  • How to make a dog outfit. Dog Coat - Step 4
    Step 4

Place the two pieces together, makin sure the outside faces are facing in.

Along one of the long sides, pin two lengths of elastic, so that these will be sewn into the seam.

    Step 5

Now pin all the other sides together.

Now you can crank out that sewing maching and start sewing. Start with the side with the elastic side, and go all the way around (well not all the way around i did, and i had to unpick =S) leaving a 10cm gap at the end.

    Step 7

Snip the corners close to the stitching so that it is easier to push these out when you turn the garment right side out.

    Step 8

now turn the garment right side out.

    Step 9

Close that 10cm gap using needle and thread.

I am usually really messy at this but because polar fleece is thick, the stitching gets lost.

    Step 10

machine sew the other end of the elastic to the other end of the coat.

You may need to measure it on your dog again to see how long the elastic needs to be.

    Step 11

hand sew the press studs onto the garment.

    Step 12

Sewong on the decorative buttons was an extra step I added purely to cover up the messy stiching from the press-studs on the other side.

    Try it on the dog!

Did your dog like the coat?

This is a pretty good idea. I think I shall make one for my sister's dog.
