When my son was a toddler one of his favorite things was to play in his sandbox made out of an plastic underbed storage box filled with sand.

When playtime is over, just put the lid back on the box and it keeps out the weather. While the plastic does eventually become weathered if it is left outside year round, it did last until my son was in grade school and moved on to other things to play with.
