I was shipping the cake as a gift to my niece so I didn't want to add extra weight with the cardboard based. I just layered the bottom with diapers. I used larger rubber bands to keep the cake tightened to the bottom layers of diapers. Keep in mind that I only have clothes on this cake, which is probably why I didn't have any problems with using diapers as a base.
