Gather your ingredients, let the butter and cream cheese come to room temperature. DO NOT HEAT THEM TO SPEED THE PROCESS!
In an electric mixer, cream the cream cheese and butter together until light and fluffy.
Mix in 1 tsp of vanilla extract.
Add in one cup of confectioner's sugar (aka Powdered sugar or icing sugar) at a time so you don't cover your kitchen or yourself in sugar. Let it mix until the frosting forms, about 2 1/2-3 mins.
Load it up into a pastry bag and pipe it onto your cupcakes!
