Companion Cube Hat

This is the very first knitting pattern I have created. It's also the first hat I've ever made. Size 17 (12.75 mm) double pointed knitting needles are what I used, but if you think you could do it in circular knitting needles than I suppose that would also work. Yarn: MUST have a super bulky yarn. I used Lion Brand Hometown USA for mine, but any super bulky yarn would work I'm sure. The gauge might be a bit different though. MC: Dark Gray or Black CC: Light Gray The pink is added with a tapestry needle, after the hat is knit. I actually didn't have a tapestry needle. I, somehow, made use with a bobby pin. I assure you, a tapestry needle would make things much easier. ALSO: My head is about 23" in circumference and I obviously made this had to fit me. If your head is bigger, don't worry, this hat stretches. I would only worry if your head is really, really small. This will probably not fit a child. It is made for an adult head. IF you want to try making it for a child/smaller head, you could probably use smaller needles and get the same result. Just make sure the yarn/needles your using get you the right gauge. And before I forget the gauge of this project was 4"x4" and it was 10x10. Perfect square. If your gauge doesn't match up at 10x10 to a 4"x4" square, your cube is going to look a little rectangular. This project was a really quick knit, only took me around 4 or 5 hours. Even if you're a beginner, there are no tricky stitches in this hat.

Instructions

BEFORE YOU START, I would suggest checking your gauge. Info on gauge is listed in the summary. CO 52 st in MC 1. K(MC) all 2. K(CC) all 3. K(MC) all (Note here is also pictured my cat, who you can see pictures of as a kitten if you view my other Weighted Companion Cube project.)

  2. Small cimg0791 1307035690

    Rows 4-14 follow this pattern. - is MC X is CC 4. - X X X - X X X - X X X - 5. - X X X - X X X - X X X - 6. - X X - - - X - - - X X - 7. - - - - - X X X - - - - - 8. - X X - X X X X X - X X - 9. - X X X X X X X X X X X - 10. - X X - X X X X X - X X - 11. - - - - - X X X - - - - - 12. - X X - - - X - - - X X - 13. - X X X - X X X - X X X - 14. - X X X - X X X - X X X - This motif is added to the hat 4 times around. In fact, this exact pattern should be able to take up one whole needle. So, in theory, each needle should have this exact pattern.

    At this point you should still have 52 stitches on your needles. 15. MC *K5, K2Tog* 7x, K3 (45 stitches) 16. CC *K4, K2Tog* 7x, K2 (38) 17. MC *K4, K2Tog* 6x, K2 (32) 18. MC K all (32) 19. MC *K3, K2Tog* 6x, k2 (26) 20. MC *K2, K2Tog* 6x, k2 (20) 21. MC *K1, K2Tog* 6x, k2 (14) 22. MC K2Tog all (7) Cut a 4-6 inch tail, as much as you need to close up the hole. Loop tail through the leftover and close up tight. Weave the extra through the hat. It will look like this once that hat is all knitted up.

    Using a tapestry needle or crochet hook, add the pink yarn to the O spots on the cube motif: 4. - X X X - X X X - X X X - 5. - X X X - X X X - X X X - 6. - X X - - - O - - - X X - 7. - - - - - X X X - - - - - 8. - X X - X O X O X - X X - 9. - X X O X O O O X O X X - 10. - X X - X X O X X - X X - 11. - - - - - X X X - - - - - 12. - X X - - - O - - - X X - 13. - X X X - X X X - X X X - 14. - X X X - X X X - X X X - Due to the large stitches of this hat, it wasn't really possible to do much more with the heart. While it may not be a perfect likeness, I guarantee that gamers will know exactly what it is though.

Once you're done embellishing with the pink, your hat is all done. When wearing this hat, don't be surprised if nerds around you drop to their feet to worship you ;) If you find any errors in this pattern please let me know. Or if you have any questions, I'll do my best to help you out. :3 P.S. Keep an eye out, I'm sure I'll be putting out more really cool hat patterns similar to this one :)
