Give your guests a comic book cushion to keep them entertained and make them comfortable.

Add to Favorites Add Your Version

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

Cut out a rectangle out of your fabric. If you are using a cushion to stuff it then make sure to cut a large enough rectangle to cover it.

  2. Step 2

    Step 2

Take your fabric, width ways, and fold under 1cm of fabric and pin a zip underneath.

  3. Step 3

    Step 3

Sew the zip in to place using a sewing machine. Make sure not to sew on to the metal zipper or you will break your needle.

  4. Step 4

    Step 4

Fold over a cm on the other side of the rectangle and pin on to the zip.

  5. Step 5

    Step 5

Unzip the zipper and sew in to place.

  6. Step 6

    Step 6

Fold the fabric inside out, so that the wrong side of the zip is facing out. Half zip the zipper shut. Pin the open sides of the square together.

  7. Step 7

    Step 7

    Sew up the first side.

  8. Step 8

    Step 8

Sew up the second side. Make sure the zipper is halfway unzipped before you start or getting in to it will be a nightmare.

  9. Step 9

    Step 9

Unzip the zipper fully and fold inside out. You have now made your cushion cover.

  10. Step 10

    Step 10

To decorate it, pick a page from your favourite comic book. Scan it in and then print it out on reverse. If you have a lazer printer this will work fine otherwise you will need to get a photocopy. Use the method described in the fabric printing tutorial to print the comic on to the cushion.

  11. Step 11

    Step 11

When the ink has dried use a black fabric pen to re-touch any areas that need to be.

  12. Step 12

    Step 12

Take a grey fabric pen and add mid-tones to the comic. Then fill the cushion cover, either with an old cushion or stuffing.

I love your site- and I want to try this comic book pillow project but, how did you get the smell of turpentine out of the fabric? I would hate to lay down on it, and have the smell of turpentine everywhere. Thanks!

There was actually no smell after I was finished, but you could febreeze or wash it and it would be fine.

I really want to do this, but the link to the tutorial is DEAD. Do you know of another one so I can learn how to print fabric?

I would love to learn how to do this but the link doesn't work and there's nothing on the page other than a picture of what looks to be some fabric.

I'm just a tad worried if I were to do this, would the turpentine have any affect on the person using the pillow.
I would LOVE to do this project, it looks great, but I wouldn't want anyone getting sick.
Any experiences with the turpentine making anyone ill?

I only needed to use a small amount when I did this, so the pillow didn't get too fumed. You could give the pillows a good wash before using them around the house to make double sure that they'll be okay.
