A week or so ago, I did a how to on a DKNY Bag I saw on Net-a-Porter (http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/dkny-inspired-bag). For the bag I used a tartan fleece type of fabric and denim. Tartan is in this fall season and capes are too. Since I had a whole unused bolt of this fabric, I decided to put it to use a bit more by making a matching cape. After looking at tons of pictures of capes from various high end online retailers, I came up with this. It's very easy to make. And, I hope you guys enjoy making it. I look forward to seeing all of your amazing versions!! well...let's get started!!

Instructions

  1. Small cape measuremets 1315502652

Measure your arms from wrist to wrist. You may need help for this. Next measure from your shoulders to were you want the cape to fall. Double this measurement. Cut cut your fabric to fit these measurements.

  2. Small 100 4495 1315502957

Fold your fabric horizontally. Now, fold it in half the other way. It should be quartered

  3. Small cape neckline 1315504110

Clip the corner of the fabric where all four side come together I made the mistake of cutting my neckline too wide. It ended up being too short in the back. So be sure to cut the top closer to the fold.(as illustrated)

  4. Small 100 4498 1315504234

Open the fabric up so that it's still folded horizontally. Cut one side straight up the middle (as illustrated)

  5. Small 100 4501 1315504578

Try your cape on and mark where you want the belt hole to go. Your belt will go through one side and out the other Create 3 1/4" long slits for the belt. I used the button hole feature on my sewing machine to create the belt holes. If you have a buttonhole feature on your machine, use it to create the belt holes. Create the holes for the belt in front first. Then, use the front holes as guides to create belt holes for the back

  6. Small belt loops 1315505150

Make the belt... Measure your waist and double that measurement Cut a piece of fabric that is 3" wide by the doubled waist measurement. Fold and press the edges in 1" then fold the entire strip in half so it is 3" wide. Top stitch both side using 1/4" seam allowance

  7. Small collar 1315505612

Let's make the collar... Measure the neckline of your cape. Add about 3" or 4" to that measurement Cut 2 pieces like the one to the left. For a wide collar cut the pieces wider.

  8. Small 100 4503 1315507084

Sew the two pieces right sides together along the short sides and the curved side. (You can use interfacing or stiffener to make to collar more sturdy) Clip the corners and turn the collar right side out. Top stitch along the edge of the collar using a 1/4" seam allowance.

  9. For a more professional finish, we'll attach the collar with a french seam (don't panic it's really easy) Pin the collar on wrong sides together. As you pin create small pleats until the collar lines up with the neckline end to end. It helps pin the end first and work your way to the middle. Sew using a 1/4" seam allowance Now, fold the collar back so the right sides are together. Pin and sew using a 1/2" seam allowance. Top stitch the seam allowance down to the inside of the cape.

  10. Small 100 4506 1315507069

Hem the raw edges You may need to press the collar to fold properly. Add buttons to close your cape and your done!! Don't forget to post your version here.
