1. 

   

   Starting with the scarf on the blue loom, anchor tail of yarn to outside peg and wrap around first peg twice.

2. 

   

   Pull first loop over the second loop and pull working yarn to take out slack but not tight.

   It should look like this.

   Continue with the next 11 pegs with steps 1 through 3.




5. 

   

   This is your first row of cast on stitches on 12 pegs. This makes a scarf that is about 2 inches wide. You can use more or less pegs if you choose.

   Now at this point it really doesn't matter if you start with either the purl or knit stitch. I always start the knit stitch first.
   Going back in the towards the first peg,wrap yarn from right across the last peg.

   I won't confuse you with trying to explain too much, but start from under the first loop with hook...

8. 

   

   Grabbing second loop on top and pulling down through first loop.

9. 

   

   Pull new loop up and take first loop off of peg...

10. 

    

    Place new loop back on same peg and pull out slack but not tight.

11. 

    

    Continue back to first peg.

12. 

    

    Completed second row.

13. 

    

    Starting the 3rd row with the purl stitch, wrap yarn from left across first peg, placing it under the first loop.

14. 

    

    Place hook through top loop...

15. 

    

    pulling second loop up through first loop...

16. 

    

    forming a new loop.
    Pull new loop up and remove first loop from peg.

17. 

    

    Place new loop on same peg and pull to take out slack.

18. 

    

    Repeat steps 14 through 17 to last (12th) peg. Continue back and forth making sure that you make only the purl stitch when going from peg 1 to 12 (left to right) and the knit stitch when going from peg 12 back to 1 (right to left). This is the garter stitch.
    
    Rule of thumb on length of scarf, make scarf as long as you are tall.
    I usually measure mine standing up with the end of the scarf at my heel but not on the floor up to my shoulder.

    To bind/cast off, starting at last peg (peg 12), loop around peg from right side as though you are making a knit stitch...but when after taking first loop off peg, place it on the next peg over (peg 11).

    Pull bottom loop up over top loop.
    Continue binding off back to peg 1.

21. 

    

    With last loop off loom, cut tail at 2 inches.

22. 

    

    Pull tail through loop and pull tight.

23. 

    

    To start hat, cast on all pegs on green loom (for adultn size hat) same on starting scarf.
    The difference here is now you won't be going back and forth, but in one direction only.
    For second row, work all the way around in either knit or purl stitch of your choice for the second row (I always start with the knit stitch).
    I use the anchoring peg as the starting point with the right peg being the first stitch working counter clockwise on loom. The peg to the left is the last stitch for the row, which is where you start the next row. So, after casting on the first row, my second row starting at the first peg on the right of the anchoring peg is where I start the knit row until I get to the last peg that is on the left side of the anchoring peg. Then the third row is starting again at the first peg on the right with the purl stitch and so on.
    Whew, hope that wasn't too confusing.
    NOTE: This stitch works for left or right handed individuals. The instructions are for right handed use, just reverse if you are left handed, working clockwise on loom.

    If you loose your place or forget which stitch your are doing for a row, if the yarn is higher than the stitch before it, then this the knit stitch.

25. 

    

    It's a purl stitch if it's lower than the stitch before it.

26. 

    Sorry, but I got anxious and didn't get pix for casting off on the hat.
    But continue around with rows until you get the desired size of your hat I ususally do about 45 to 50 rows.
    With the working yarn start with wrapping it around the first peg as though you are making a knit stitch, removing both loops from peg, place new loop on next peg, which is still the working yarn and continue this step until all stitches are off loom. The working yarn will double with loop at this point. Cut tail at 4 to 5 inches and pull it through loop and pull tight to close top of hat. Secure tail inside of hat. Hope that was clear enough to understand. I will post a pic when I make another hat for casting off. Sorry guys.
