Nana Moon's Carrier Tidy!

"In a climate where we're encouraged more and more to find alternatives to using plastic bags and to recycle the ones we accumulate, this is the perfect time to create a beautiful little doodah to keep your plastic bags handy and to keep 'em from cluttering up your kitchen cupboard! An ideal project for the crafter who's only just getting to grips with sewing (me!), this design is almost fail-proof for the most novice of makers. Hoorah!

Instructions

  • How to make a bag holder. Carrier Tidy - Step 1
    Step 1

Source a particularly pretty piece of fabric. Maybe you want to make use of cloth from an old dress or a vintage bed sheet? This one is made from a section of reclaimed vintage curtain. You can use anything you like really.

  • Step 2

Cut your fabric into a rectangle. The size of your rectangle will be dictated by how long you want your bag holder to be. It's not very prescriptive. You decide! This one is 35cms long and 25cms wide.

  • Step 3

Stitch a deep hem into the top length of your fabric (big enough to fit a pretty ribbon through later.

  • Step 4

Stitch another hem at the bottom length of your fabric (big enough to fit ribbon/wool/string through later.

  • Step 5

Sew the two unhemmed sids of your fabric together to create a fabric 'tube'.

  • How to make a bag holder. Carrier Tidy - Step 6
    Step 6

Thread pretty ribbon through the top hem. Don't tie the ribbon tight as this is where you will be putting your bag IN. Tie a secure knot though (leaving enough leeway to get your bas in) and create a loop for hanging you bag holder with another knot. You can tie a beautiful bow with the remaining ribbon if you like?

  • Step 7

Thread ribbon/string/yarn through the bottom hem. Don't tie tightly. You're looking to try and make this end tight enough that your bags don't fall straight through but loose enough that you can tug them out one by one as you need them.

  • How to make a bag holder. Carrier Tidy - Step 8
    Step 8

Gather up your poly bags and pop 'em in the top hole! Hang your pretty Carrier Tidy from a quirky hook or door knob in your kitchen and be sure to recycle those bags when you go shopping!
