    First, cut a square (measuring a little bigger than your cushion filler) from the jeans. This will be the main backing for the cushion.

    Now print off your template. I got mine from Google images

    using the other leg of the jeans, trace the template of the butterfly. Make sure the different segments in the middle are very clear!

    Cut out around the OUTSIDE of the template, don't cut the insides yet. Leave this to one side for a moment.

    Now cut a square (smaller than the square cut in step 1) and fold over the raw edges.

    Sew it onto the denim square using straight stitch (very close to the edge)

    Now sew on the denim butterfly using a close zigzag stitch all the way around the edge.

    Zigzag stitch around the segments inside as well

    (This technique is called "Mola". it means "reverse appliqué". For this the material is layered, the design is selectively cut out across the layers, the edges of the cut-out material are tucked under and then stitched in place. The end result is the revelation of the design in the colors of the material beneath.)

    Anyways...using a stitch ripper, rip a hole in the denim layer. Be carful not to rip the butterfly fabric underneath!

    Now, using small sharp scissors, cut out the denim layer. Here's one completed

    Now cut a square (the same size as your denim square) from the butterfly material

    Pin and sew in the invisible zip

    Flip the two sides RS together, sew around the 3 raw edges and you're done!
