  • Step 1

Use your tail comb to create a deep side part, then make a triangular section extending from the crown of your head to the middle of both brows. Then separate out a 1-inch (25-mm) section closest to your part.

    Step 2

Divide this section into three sections. Then bring the back section under the middle, making it the new middle. (This is what differentiates a French braid from a Dutch: The sections go under, not over!)

    Step 3

Repeat with the front section, bringing it under the middle section. Keep the hair close to your scalp.

    Step 4

Gather a skinny slice-of-pie section that extends from the center of your head to your front hairline, then bring the hair under the middle section. Move your hands along your hairline so the braid travels down the side of your face.

    Step 5

Continue gathering slice-of-pie sections and bringing them under the middle section until you run out of hair in the triangular section. Continue with a classic three-strand braid and finish with a small rubber band.

  • Step 6

Starting at the bottom of the braid and working toward the top, tug at the sides to widen it and create texture.
