I don't know how to reply to comments, so I'm hoping that I did this right ...

Spinning yarn is so much easier than I thought it would be, I did a majority of this sitting on the couch or at work when my boss wasn't around. I suggest that you do a little research, just type "spinning drop spindle" into your search engine or on youtube or you can check out the lj community spinning fiber. My advise to to pre-draft (pulling the wool or other fiber into long, thin strips before spinning), it makes things so much easier. And also, go with a fiber like Blue Faced Leicester or Mohair to start off with, as they are a lot easier to work with. To start out, you'll probably be looking at a cost of about $25 USD if you decide to purchase a drop spindle instead of making one. About $15 for the wool if you make your drop spindle.

I forgot to add that I factored in shipping to those costs. It would be cheaper if you can find a place that sells wool in your area. Also, some terms to use when looking for wool would be roving, batts, and top. You can buy colors already blended together, or you can buy colors seperate and attach them while spinning (or card them together, but I ca't afford cards, so I don't). I've found a lot more success in buying wool on etsy, rather than ebay. You'll probably need 3-4 ounces of wool. I think that I may have used around 3 ounces for my scarf, plus a smaller scarf for my 4 year old neice.
