I decided I wanted to make a pair of flip-flops just for something to do in my spare time.. I used rubber cement to hold everything together... but I'm sure a hot glue gun would work just as well. I hope these instructions aren't too confusing I tried to take enough pictures along the way to explain it... but if you have any questions feel free to ask

Description

I decided I wanted to make a pair of flip-flops just for something to do in my spare time.. I used rubber cement to hold everything together... but I'm sure a hot glue gun would work just as well. I hope these instructions aren't too confusing I tried to take enough pictures along the way to explain it... but if you have any questions feel free to ask

Instructions

  1. Small p5240002 1306374938

make a basic pattern... I traced a pair of my flip-flops to use as a template... I cut out four pieces to make the soles of the sandals (four pieces for each flip-flop or eight in total)

  2. Small p5240011 1306375315

i then glued the four pieces of cardboard together... making the sole for one sandal... and did the same for the other sole... to make sure they stay together press them under something heavy until the glue is dry.

  3. Small p5240010 1306375478

tracing the pattern again use a thinner piece of cardboard and cut out two more foot pieces (ignore.. the straps in the picture i was attempting to do something else before i ended up making the sandals)

  4. Small p5240012 1306375573

Cut two pieces of fabric that are about two inches wide and about 12 inches long... (i was originally gonna use the two skinny pieces for the piece between the toes but used ribbon instead)

  5. Small p5240014 1306375818

fold the edges of the strips into the middle and then fold in half... stitch along edge to hold it together... these become the top straps... I made my straps slightly angular by pinching the middle and adding another stitch to hold it

  6. Small p5240015 1306375921

Cut two pieces of ribbon six inches long... fold in half and then place around the top straps in the middle... I attached my ribbon by folding it in half around the top strap and pulling the end through the loop created... to hold it in place add a simple stitch on the back

  7. Small p5240018 1306376033

cut a piece of fabric that is slightly larger than the template... try for about an inch... measure where the toe strap should go ... cut a hole and thread ribbon through and glue in place. The thinner piece of cardboard should be included with this... glue it to the piece of fabric to hold it in place threading the ribbon through both the fabric and the cardboard

  8. Small p5240019 1306376165

Measure where you want your top straps to go.. I actually put it on my foot to figure this out.. Cut holes through the fabric and the cardboard and thread the top strap through, glue in place. Cut slits around the fabric to the edge of the cardboard... fold to back and glue in place (sorry I don't have pics to show you what a I mean)

  9. Small p5240020 1306376416

After all that your sandal should look something like this... Take the thicker pieces of cardboard from earlier and glue to the fabric covered piece of the sandal. You may want to place it under something heavy to make sure it stays together

  10. Small p5240022 1306376457

cut pieces from foam.. these will be the bottoms of the sandles... glue this to the piece from step nine... Don't worry if all the pieces aren't the same size you can always trim them with a knife.

  11. Small p5250025 1306376729

this is my finished pair... I trimmed the edges with ribbon to hide the cardboard... and added red paint to add a little more colour to them
