I used manic panic hair dye for their hair but you can also use permanent marquers or something like that. we used scraps of tissu to make their cloths and a fine tip Sharpy for their makeup. the important thing is to have fun I guess

I use my barbies as mini maneuquins now. I didn't even think to give them makeovers. Great Idea!

If you want to do this again and actually care about the doll or plan on displaying it or something, do not use sharpie markers or any permanent markers. Sharpie damages the plastic and will make it look all distorted and faded. I did lots of doll experimentation in my day, so I know! =]
