Go bananas with Gula Melaka, the toffee equivalent of the East!
This was a banana cake recipe I found here: http://epicureasia.com/food/get-caked-away/

For those who don't know, Gula Melaka is also known as Palm Sugar and its very popular in South East Asia for deserts and cooking. Its fragrant, sticky yet not too sweet, like an Asian equivalent of toffee.
You can replace this with molasses or any dark sugar.
I think a dash of vanilla is added as I felt the cake lacked OOMPH. Feel free to ask any questions!

I don't like bananas but I would give this a whirl.

Hey thanks for your comment! Just to let you know, when making the butterscotch, you melt the gula with the water first, take it off the heat and then add the cream. I suggest making more butterscotch as it feels like its not enough. Let me know how it works out! and I never knew gula melaka was gula aren! hehehe

In Indonesia we call it "gula aren". It's also yummy mixed with peanuts. ^^
Should try this someday (considering that there are abundance of banana trees in the backyard).
