Inspired by Anthropologie's "Solarbloom Clutch"

I saw this clutch on Anthropologie's website and decided to try it out. The original clutch is made of straw. I used linen and attached it to denim for extra weight.

This is the first time I've ever provided a pattern. If any of you have suggestions or tips for creating patterns please send them my way. I'm open to suggestions on all of my projects (^_^)

Let's get to it!!!

Instructions

  1. Step 1 1

Start by printing the PDF pattern and cutting it out. Be sure your printer is set to full size

Place the pattern on your fabric with the straight edge on the fold..

Trace around the pattern from top to bottom.

You'll need to cut two of these pieces. One out of your outer fabric and one out of your lining fabric.

This will be the back and flap of the clutch. Set those pieces aside.

  2. Step 2 2

Place the pattern on 2 more pieces of fabric just as you did in the previous step.

Trace around the pattern starting at the dotted line.

  3. Step 3 3

Use a ruler to get a straight top edge.

This will be the front of your clutch

  4. Step 4 4

Your pieces should look like this

    -------------------------------->

  5. Step 5 5

To determine where you want to attach the snap, place the front outer piece on top of the lining piece.

Attach the snap piece in the determined places

  6. Step 6 6

Next, we need to assemble the flower...

You can use the petal provided in the pattern or create your own.

Place the petal pattern on the fabric with the straight edge on the fold. Cut this out.

You'll need to cut 5 of these petals.

  7. Step 7 7

Use fray check or zig zag stitch around the edges to prevent fraying

  8. Step 8 8

Fold the petal in half at the point.

Make a small stitch to hold the edges together at the point

  9. Step 9 9

Repeat this process on all 10 ends of the petals

Your point should look like this

    <-------------------------------

  10. Step 10 10

Make small gathering stitches down the center of each petal and gather the center.

  11. Step 11 11

Place two of the petals on top of each others cross ways. Hand stitch them together.

  12. Step 12 12

Place the third petal on top of the two at a diagonal
Continue with the remaining petals hand stitching them together until you've completed your flower.

  13. Step 13 13

Cut a small strip of fabric.

Fold and press it into thirds.

Tie a knot in the center of the fabric and trim the tails.

  14. Step 14 14

Hand stitch the knot to the center of the flower.

  15. Step 15 15

Hand stitch the flower to the top of the outer back piece.

  16. Step 16 16

    Let's put it all together...

Place the lining and outer front pieces right sides together.

Pin and sew along the top straight edge only.

  17. Step 17 17

Turn the piece right side out.

Press the seam flat and top stitch it with a 1/8" seam allowance.

  18. Step 18 18

With the right sides together, sandwich the front piece between the lining and outer back pieces.

  19. Step 19 19

    Carefully pin and sew.

You'll have to fold the flower back out of the way.

Leave a small opening at the bottom

  20. Step 20 20

Use the small opening to turn your bag right side out.

  21. Step 21 21

Press the bag flat and straighten it out.

Top stitch along the top flap with a 1/8" seam allowance

    Slip stitch the bottom opening

  22. Step 22 22

    You're all done!!
