So if you look around my patterns, you’ll see that I make a lot of quite girly stuff – cats feature heavily, along with animated cute stuff. So I thought I’d man up over Christmas when it came to making a gift for the mister and make this. Originally published on my Amiguruthi blog.

Description

So if you look around my patterns, you’ll see that I make a lot of quite girly stuff – cats feature heavily, along with animated cute stuff. So I thought I’d man up over Christmas when it came to making a gift for the mister and make this. Originally published on my Amiguruthi blog.

Instructions

  1. The Essentials: Hook: 5mm (handle – chunky yarn) and 3.5mm (chain, ball and spikes – DK yarn) Wool: Chunky knit wool in brown (pattern alteration also given for DK); DK in grey. Terms: Sc: Single Crochet Dc: Double Crochet INC: Increase DEC: Decrease BLO: Back Loop Only Crochet in continuous rounds. I’ve finally cracked the magic ring, but you can also start by Ch2 and working into the second chain from the hook. Because I improvised this very quickly, I haven’t taken my usual in progress photos, but hopefully it’s straight forward enough to work out, and I’ll illustrate where possible from the final piece.

  2. Handle option 1 - chunk yarn In chunky brown with the 5mm hook: Magic ring/ Ch2 Round 1: 6Sc into the magic ring/ 2nd chain from hook. [6] Round 2: INC around [12] Round 3: {1Sc, INC} around [18] Round 4: Sc around BLO [18] Turns the work at a 90 degree angle Round 5 – 24: Sc around [18] Return to working under both loops Round 25: Sc around BLO [18] Round 26: {1sc, DEC} around [12] STUFF Round 27: DEC around [6]

  3. Handle option 2 - DK yarn If you’ve not got chunky yarn and want to use DK instead you will need to use a 3.5mm hook, and increase your diameter to 30sc. Work rounds 1 – 3 as above but continue as below: Round 4: {2sc, INC} around [24] Round 5: {3sc, INC} around [30] Round 6: Sc around BLO [30] Turns the work at a 90 degree angle Round 7 – 26: Sc around [30] Return to working under both loops Round 27: Sc around BLO [30] Round 28: {3sc, DEC} around [24] Round 29: {2sc, DEC} around [18] Round 30: {1sc, DEC} around [12] STUFF Round 31: DEC around [6]

  4. Spiked Ball The ball is made first and the spikes added separately. Ball Using the 3.5mm hook and grey yarn: Magic ring/ Ch2 Round 1: 6Sc into the magic ring/ 2nd chain from hook. [6] Round 2: INC around [12] Round 3: {1Sc, INC} around [18] Round 4: {2sc, INC} around [24] Round 5: {3sc, INC} around [30] Round 6: {4sc, INC} around [36] Round 7: {5sc, INC} around [42] Round 8 – 13: Sc around [42] Round 14: {5sc, DEC} around [36] Round 15: {4sc, DEC} around [30] Round 16: {3sc, DEC} around [24] Round 17: {2sc, DEC} around [18] Round 18: {1sc, DEC} around [12] STUFF Round 19: DEC around [6]

  5. Small 211220122409

Spikes (x6) Using the 3.5mm hook and grey yarn: Magic ring/ Ch2 Round 1: 3Sc into the magic ring/ 2nd chain from hook. [3] Round 2: INC around [6] Round 3: {1sc, INC} around [9] Finish off leaving the end open. Stuff very lightly, and sew in place around the ball (I found it easiest to make and place all six before sewing to ensure they were evenly spread).

  6. Small 211220122408

Chain Half Loop (x2) Half loops are attached to the end of the handle, and the top of the spiked ball, as seen to the left. See the half loop at either end of the chain? Using the 3.5mm hook and grey yarn: Ch 12 Row 1: 10Dc. Finish off and sew in place, like a rainbow shape on one end of the handle and the top of the ball (to use a peaceful simile for a not so peaceful object).

  7. Small 211220122412

Full Links (x4) Ch22 Row 1: 20Dc Finish off and create your chain exactly as you would a paper chain – loop one through the half loop on the handle and sew closed into a ring, then loop the next through the link just created and sew closed, then the third and then the forth, but make sure to ALSO loop the forth through the half ring on the ball before you sew it closed. If you forget, simply make an extra link – you can make the chain as long as you like, four was just the number I arbitrarily chose.

  8. Small 211220122413

You can call it finished there, but I decided the handle looked a bit bare so I added a band. Band Using the 3.5mm hook and grey yarn: Ch32 Row 1: 30Dc Finish off and sew round the handle (adjust as necessary for your own – add in/ take away Dc’s if you need to).

  9. Small 211220122406

Your flail is complete - go forth and beat things, manly crocheter. And as the bearer of this gift has pointed out, make two handles and attach them with a chain and you have a whole new weapon - nunchucks!
