2-Strand Chunky Cowl pattern
 <  Image 1 of 9  >

OK, I think I have this right - it’s very simple - so if my numbers dont quite add up just repeat the row pattern to the end of the round and join each round with a slip stitch… see previous post for more pictures too…

Please note that although I am a NZer I am using US crochet terms (I have been brainwashed), for you correct NZers, Brits, and Aussies here is the translation:

Slip Stitch Slst (US) = Single Crochet SC (Aus/UK)

Single Crochet SC (US) = Double Crochet DC (Aus/UK)

Half Double Crochet HDC (US) = Half Treble Crochet HTC (Aus/UK)

How bloody confusing!… Onwards…

  1. Step 1

    Pattern:

hold two strands of yarn together throughout pattern.

Foundation Chain: Ch 50 loosly, Slst to first ch to form round.

ROW 1: Ch 1, SC into second ch from hook, SC in the butt (behind of each chain to make nice edge) of each ch. Slst into first SC of round to join round. (50 SC total).

ROW 2: Ch 2 (does not count as one HDC), HDC into each SC until end. Slst into first HDC to join round. (50 HDC total).

ROWS 3-7: Ch 2 (does not count as one HDC), HDC into each stitch until end. Slst into first HDC to join round. (50 HDC total).

ROW 8: Ch 2 (does not count as one HDC), *HDC 4 stitches, HDC2tog (DEC), repeat from * 8 times. HDC in final 2 stitches. Slst to join round. (42 HDC total)

ROWS 9-10: Ch 2 (does not count as one HDC), HDC into each stitch until end. Slst into first HDC to join round. (42 HDC total).

ROW 11: Ch 2 (does not count as one HDC), *HDC 8 stitches, HDC2tog (DEC), repeat from * 4 times. HDC in final 2 stitches. Slst to join round. (38 HDC total).

ROW 12-14: Ch 2 (does not count as one HDC), HDC into each stitch until end. Slst into first HDC to join round. (38 HDC total).

ROW 15: Ch 2 (does not count as one HDC), *HDC 8 stitches, HDC2tog (DEC), repeat from * 3 times. HDC in final 8 stitches. Slst to join round. (35 HDC total).

ROW 16: Ch 1, SC into each HDC til end, Slst to join round. (35 SC total).

Fasten off, weave in ends and get snuggly in your new cowl!

  2. Step 2

    Step 2

    Ideas for improving/altering this pattern:

    - Spread the decreases in ROW 8 out over two rows (7&8 or 8 & 9) - I got a wee bit carried away with my decreases there, so there’s quite a prominent decrease - see photo of cowl laid out on floor - can’t tell when you’re wearing it though!

    - Don’t join the rounds, work in one continuous spiral to avoid any hint of a seam.

    - Go crazy! Change the length, width, stitch, hook size, yarn weight, shape, whatever!!!
