cool basic sewing projects?

i apologise. you're going to hate me for this, but if either of you (or anyone else) can help me with this similar problem
1. bag idea, i think i'll try that (just got a sewing machine for my birthday and i know how to use it but i don't know how to sew. i've been teaching my self.) when i get a little better
2. if either of you know how to sew already or have any basic tips for me in any way shape or form that even might be common sense to you, could you tell?
3. because i don't want to come off as so rude, i just finished making a bunch of book covers for my schoolbooks (in rainbow order: one red, one orange, etc.) i had a few problems but hey, they're book covers, something that if you mess up on , no one cares.

I used both hand sewing and machining.Spent 6/12 without a machine found it really hard.If you want to learn to sew simple cross stitch patterns can get you in the rhythm of stuff. Now I free bead a lot which is really hard to do on a machine.

Sewing Services?

So, I'm currently saving up for a dress form. I have 30 dollars, and its 100. I get 10/week in allowance but that gets spent sometimes on fabric and music...so I obviously need more money :/

SO I was thinking that maybe I could sew on patches for Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts for 1 dollar/patch. But what else could I do? Its simple enough and would take like 10-15 minutes out of my day cuz its a simple straight stitch on my machine, but I don't know what else I could do.

Can you guys think of anything simple like sewing on patches that I could do? I'm not very good with repairing clothes, so thats not an option.

I'm just drawing a blank.

I handsew all of my plushies. It's sort of relaxing and you feel more accomplished when you finish, even though it takes ten times as long as a machine. Plus, I like watching TV while I sew. Happy

sewing machine... any recommendatons??

I have an Husquvarna and it fits my needs perfecly. However if I could change one thing I would have a drop bobbin. So when you are looking around try and see if you can find one with a drop bobbin, makes life a little easier.

I use a Brother. It's digital and has a bunch of cool decorative stitches. Also, it's super easy to use (and the manual is easy to read).

Sewing machines create uniform seams... but I'm always better satisfied with the outcome when I hand sew. I think maybe it's because I put more effort into hand sewing.

cool basic sewing projects?

Hello all. i'm new to the boards so it's nice to meet you all and I apologize in advance for the long post.
i'm wondering if anyone has some ideas for some basic sewing projects (i'm fairly new to it)

I have a bunch of fabric I picked up in a sale and while I have some stuff in mind I got A LOT of fabric and i'm not sure what to do with it all. first I have a 65 by 65 inch piece of black long pile fur and a few scraps leftover from making my fuzzy leg warmers (which i'm thinking of making a how to for because they turned out really well and making the pattern was very easy)
I also have 2 pieces of blue skull print fabric left over from my curtains one piece is 45 by 52 inches and the other is 45 by 35 inches.

Then I got 10 metres of black cotton with a white cross print.

and also this fairly nice, stretchy fabric in blue (6 metres) and black (16 metres)

I Had a budget of about £50 so the fact that everything was £1 a metre (except the fur which was about £14 for 2 metres) meant I was able to really stock up.
looking forward to hearing some ideas Happy

i agree with everyone- it depends on what you are making. a machine gives a much stronger uniform stitch. so if i am making a larger plush toy that is going to greatly played with i use the machine. smaller plush, for older kids or decoration, i like to hand sew. there are a lot of different stitches. i bet you can find cool tutorials for hand sewing on online, or even pick up a book at your library.

There are different stitches you can do by hand, though I can't really explain what they are. Google it, I love google...the one search engine that has paid much tribute to most of my know-how.
