50s Style Patterns?
ebay has tons of vintage patterns that you can get for pretty cheap. Although you may have to modify them for size. Keeping in mind that size 0 didn't exist in the 50s and actual sizes are way different now. A size 12 is about a size 4.

I absolutely ADORE the Brother CP7500. I could gush about it for hours. http://www.amazon.com/Brother-CP-7500-Computerized-Sewing-Machine/dp/B0039YOVSG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1349267245&sr=8-1&keywords=brother+cp+7500
I just did a massive hunt back in July for a new sewing machine and this one definitely shined from all of the reviews that I read and in regards to a good quality machine for a price i could afford. It has lots of fancy and practical stitches. And the tension with this thing has been a dream. Not one gnarled mess, and I've sewn on a wide variety of fabrics with it without one problem. So I'm in love with the beast.
I'm assuming you're in the UK, but I did find out that by ordering through Walmart, you get over $25 worth of extra accessories for the exact same price, so why the hell not. I doubt that helps you but perhaps you can find an some place offering a similar deal.
Best of luck~
50s Style Patterns?
I just bought two 50's dress patterns by Butterick from Joann's for $1 each. There were around 10 different dresses, but sadly most of them were out of stock in my size at that moment, which sometimes happens when patterns are on sale.
Watch the weekly sales flyers for Joann's. They have $1-2 pattern sales by brand all the time. Also, I totally recommend just going to Joann's and planting yourself at the pattern book table and just flipping through each brand's book and writing down which ones you like. I always collect pattern numbers then wait until the brand I want is on sale for $1.
And personally, I've had horrible luck with Burda patterns. I recently bought one of their patterns and was more frustrated, and pissed off, with their lack of instructions than I have ever been with any other sewing pattern.
Vintage dress patterns?
Hm... I don't have any on hand but sometimes I see vintage style dress patterns at the Walmarts here. They're usually for sizes 8-16 so if you're in that range, I could probably pick one up for you and mail it out Could you post some pictures of the dress styles you like?

Brother is perfect if you're looking for something good and inexpensive, Singer is a standard, and Bernina's are ah-mazing....
Sewing machine recommendations?
I always recommend Singer Heavy Duty machines because they're durable and last forever. I got one for my twentieth birthday, it's got 20+ stitch patterns, sews on thick fur-like fabrics, and can even be gentle with more delicate fabrics like tulle and satin. Mine was $180 USD and worth every penny.
My previous Singer machine (a Scholastic) I had before was one I got in 2000 for my 10th birthday, and it was mostly plastic and is still working today.
Sewing machine recommendations?
Hi there, I'm looking for a new sewing machine and just wondered if you guys could recommend any for me.
I'd like one that can handle heavier fabrics such as denim or curtains and I'd like quite a few stitching options. My budget is around £120ish but obviously the cheaper the better.
Thanks for any tips or suggestions
Need Patterns for Shorts
I definitely hear you on the "matronly" aspect that a lot of patterns share at the average supply store. It can be hard to see anything but what they picture on the pattern, but I have a few hints that I use.
-Look at the black and white drawing, not the photo of the sewn garment...throwing in colors and patterns can be distracting.
-Try looking in the costume section. I use some costume wear for everyday wear.
-Places like Hancock Fabrics (my local Joann-esque store) may carry more than "Simplicity" or "McCalls" or your average everyday pattern company. Lauren mentioned "Burda", and I know that Hancock Fabrics carries that company. A lot of the patterns are for slightly younger people, and they have a young persons offshoot whose name I cannot recall right now. Now I have never bought one of their patterns, so I can't tell you how good they are, but it may be worth a shot. Also, maybe a Vogue pattern might work. Take some time and delve into the pattern books.
-Free interwebs tutorials are your friend. I have a couple of shorts drafting tuts in my bookmarks folder, so I know they're there. Use scrap fabric first if you don't want to ruin the good stuff trying out new things.
This turned out way longer than I thought. I hope I helped in some way. Since I don't know your skill level, I apologize if I may be running over stuff you already know. Just smile and nod. It gets me through a lot of conversations! :} (Good luck!)
50s Style Patterns?
As Birgit said, Burda does some 50s style stuff. Here's one of their patterns:

Need Patterns for Shorts
You can browse online, for example here: http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns?creator=6&for=1&most_recent=1&pattern_garment_type=14
Otherwise, if you have a pair of shorts that fits you well, try drafting a simple pattern from those, depending on the type of shorts you want - if you just want something simple and not very fitted, this could work for you.
Hope I could help!
