Hi there! Anyone in Brissy? I've been here since August 2011 and tbh really don't know the city that well, especially the local craft community. There is a great place called Reverse Garbage which I've found though which collects materials from companies which would otherwise go to waste and makes them available to crafters - everything from card and wood to leather and lace.

Little Girls In Hussy Costumes....
Started over 4 years ago · Last post over 1 year ago ·
Have a look at the tv programs and cartoons kids watch these days and you'll see where this trend comes from. The shows aimed at teen girls particularly. Well guess what producers, your shows are actually watched by lots of pre-teen girls too and they want to look like their screen idols. TV, movies and magazines have been pushing girls towards this look for years and the closer they get the more they push it. Is it any wonder the kids want those outfits?
What about the woman who dressed her 3yo as the prostitute from Pretty Woman for a pageant? When did pageants start awarding the prize to the kids who looked like growth-stunted adults rather than kids?
There is much more here than just bad parenting, it's a decaying social system

Depression is an illness and it can be treated. The first step is accepting you have a problem, the second is getting help with it. Once you have that help things can start to improve, but you are the only one who can make the first move, take that first step.
I've been there. I have depression. I have other issues which complicate it too, but I know them and am dealing with them. One step is all it takes. One step at a time.

Ok, I don't get this. You compare slaughterhouses to the Jewish genocide but you happily go out and kill insects just to display them?

Did you know?

Ok, some good info on this thread, but please be aware that vaccines save lives. There is a huge backlash against some vaccines right now and it is causing life-threatening conditions to re-emerge.
I'm not saying every vaccine is good, but saying all are bad is going to endanger the lives you want to help. There was a huge outcry against the MMR vaccine with one scientist saying it caused autism. Despite the fact that none of his findings can be supported scientifically and that he himself has admitted it was fraudulent the uptake of the MMR vaccine has dropped significantly, leading to exposure to these life-altering conditions.
Look at each case individually, please...

for a how-to?
I have a how-to I wrote a while back for my woodspirits, but it runs to 30 pics + text...
I'm happy to post it, but is it too long? I could lose a few pics without too much impact but most are there to show something particular, so I can't really cut them.

I've never had a boyfriend.
Started over 2 years ago · Last post almost 2 years ago ·
As a guy, I'd say don't try to get a boyfriend, try and find somewhere to make friends. If you can get to know a group of people you'll get more confident in meeting others. It's always hard if you don't socialise much, I'm an Aspie (Aspergers syndrome) so for me just meeting people was a huge challenge. Didn't have my first real girlfriend till I was 23.
There's a lot of pressure these days to find that 'perfect' someone, but don't let societies expectations railroad you into a relationship just because you think you should, find friends first and if something developes, it does. No rush :)
Take a look at the things you like to do. Maybe google your interests along with your town name, see if there's any clubs you might like. Most of all, when you do meet guys, don't be afraid to say no if you're not romantically inclined!

Oh my, I'm sorry to hear this. Have you tried Reiki or other energy healing systems? Only thing I can think might help really (and being a bloke we have to try don't we? :) )
May the Gods hold you and bring you ease.

PETA?
Started almost 3 years ago · Last post over 2 years ago ·
Yes, the mink problem is a huge issue here. Water voles (the actual basis for Ratty in Wind in the Willows) in particular are on the edge of extinction due to the release and subsequent spread of the mink and we are having to trap and kill them in order to save our native fauna. Stoats and weasels are a part of the ecosystem here, mink are not.
It's no good just looking at the immediate result (animals freed by PETA yay!) if you have ignored the long-term damage (same animals wipe out native species...). That is not activism. Though it does remind me a little too much of party politics.

Friends not being friends
Started over 2 years ago · Last post over 2 years ago ·
The pricing advice I gave was what I was told I should be using by a business consultant, if I actually wanted to make any sort of profits. If it's a hobby you can get away with much less (which is why a lot of items are underpriced) but for an income, that list is the minimum you should be charging. A lot of people also underprice because they don't really believe their things are worth that much. Unfortunately, this all means it's very difficult to actually make a living, especially as a sole source of income.

PETA?
Started almost 3 years ago · Last post over 2 years ago ·
To me, PETA are living examples of why the end does not justify the means. They have actually caused more feeling against their cause here than for because their methods can NOT be justified. How many of you own a pet, for example? That cute dog, cat, gerbil or even stick insect makes you anathema to PETA. So, if they ever did get their way, we'd have millions of animals without homes, since they want pet ownership banned. What do we do with them?

To Be Vegetarian or Not?
Started over 2 years ago · Last post about 2 years ago ·
To start, I'm omnivorous and intend to stay that way, as that is the best way for my body to get the nutrients it needs. Evolution took millions of years to perfect this system, I ain't gonna monkey with it! I would be happier if there were better conditions in all farms but the fact that some are sub-par, or even downright terrible, does not change the fact that most farmers actually do care about their livestock and do the best they can for them.
DarkAshHurts - I mean, really... Wake up and smell the roses girl, what happened in the death camps can in no way be compared to slaughter houses. That's about as insulting as comparing a papercut to a serial killers victims wounds.
So, people want to live without harming any life? See how long they last on a sunshine diet. That's not to mention all the micro-organisms that die from medicines, insects that get exterminated, etc.. And how about the rest of the planet? Do they drive, use a car/bus/taxi/train etc? Do they use plastics? How about makeup, a large percentage of which contains petrochemical byproducts. There are many things in the world which humans have made, used or produced which cause far more damage for far longer...

Pride and Prejudice
Started over 2 years ago · Last post over 2 years ago ·
The beauty of Pride and Prejudice is in the dialogue. I think it would be very difficult to do a modern-feeling version with that dialogue, and more difficult to recreate the dialogue in modern English, but more power to your elbow for trying! I can see how the characters could evolve into modern times but modern English is sadly lacking as an expressive medium compared to Austins time

Friends not being friends
Started over 2 years ago · Last post over 2 years ago ·
Making stuff, and making a living from it, is very difficult. I spent the whole of last year doing it as a business (with a part time job to help) and don't think I even managed to cover my costs by the end.
The important thing is to get your stuff known. Twitter, facebook, myspace - be prepared to bore the ass off your friends with news about your creations! If they are friends they'll understand :) Also, don't just rely on Etsy, have a look at this link, 15 alternatives to etsy http://hubpages.com/hub/Great-Alternatives-to-Etsy Many of them are low fee or no fee and some are even no commission.
Also, do you have craft fairs/markets near you? Or near enough to travel to? They are a great way to get known.
Lastly, it's the bugbear of all craftsters - pricing. Most hand-made goods are underpriced, which makes it really hard for people who are trying to make a living at it. Start with your materials costs, and double them. Then work out how long each item is taking you IN TOTAL timewise. You want to charge that at a decent hourly rate - we ain't on min wage here ok, we're worth more than that! Now count the hours you do marketing and selling the items, and add a percentage of that (same hourly rate) to the price.
Done all that? Now look at the figure and scream...
