    Vegan

Started 5 months ago · Last post 23 days ago ·
Thought I'd chip in my story to see if it'd help.... :)
I've been vegetarian for 8yrs (omg it's been that long? Lol) I became one in high school, & also want to become vegan. Anywho, I have figured out that becoming vegan is impossible right now, bc I still live at home with my parents who buy my food (also it is a very unhealthy all meat-eating, hunting loving, unsupportive household). I also live in an area (middle of nowhere) where vegan food alternatives are virtually unheard of & expensive when found. .....so for now, until I move out, make my own money, & don't have people bitching at me everyday about it, I have to wait & live with it. Lol It sucks, but that's life.
Also giving up the products I still eat (which is just cheese, & milk if its already in something...I drink soymilk when I make it) I find unbelievably hard in my strict family & surroundings. I've decided that when I do move out, I'm going to be vegan at home & vegetarian when eating at family functions & out with friends, which would avoid a lot of hassle. That would work perfectly in my situation.

So u don't have to be completely vegan all at once, & sometimes you have to wait a long time until u can do it on ur own. I also agree that judgement & negative people are going to bother you a lot more afterwards, so grow a thick skin, & educate yourself with facts to fight them back. Not everyone's going to support you (still no one in my family does), but you just gotta do what's right for yourself & not let them bother you.
If your vegan, look up/try high protein foods (not just soy, which is actually very fattening!!) like beans, spinach, lentils, seitan, tempeh, quinoa, nuts. & take vitamins (I take b12 also). Look up lots of recipes, & start cooking all your own foods, & experiment with them! Good luck!

so i'm withdrawing from culinary school...

Started about 1 year ago · Last post 7 months ago ·
My sister wants to go into the baking business, & shes never went to school. Shes learning by just trying out online recipes (which r free!), & mix/matching them & creating her own! She mostly likes cupcakes, so shes bought a lot of cupcake books. Volunteering or getting a job at a shop sounds like a perfect idea! Just take notes on how they do it, & ask questions.

I feel your pain tho. I went to art school, & dropped out bc of money, stress, & bc i KNEW i didnt need a degree to do what i love. I have aspergers syndrome (which gives me social anxiety & stress), so it was rough on me too. Its not always the right thing to leave, but i know it was right for me. :) When i get more money, i plan to go back & just take art classes to learn more for myself.

Started about 1 year ago · Last post 6 months ago ·
i put garlic on everything so much, vampires would hate me. :P
I mostly use it on saute'd vegetables, & in any asian dishes i make. It adds a flavor boost to anything really.

Vegetarian dishes for the cook who can’t cook?

Started over 1 year ago · Last post over 1 year ago ·
It takes me about 15 mins to make veggie stirfry with rice.
It takes 15 minutes to cook the raw rice (like says on package), but while its cooking i chop all the vegetables (any kind/amount you want) and get the ingredients out (usually soy sauce & garlic or store-bought sweet chili sauce). Then when theres 6 minutes left on the rice, i cook the veggies on the skillet. 1 minute left, add the sauce/spices. When rice is done, put in a bowl or plate. Put veggies on top. Done.

You can make "fried rice" the same way, but use brown rice, and add an egg to the skillet on the other side (this will give u some protein too). When its scrambled and cooked, mix it w/ the veggies. Turn off burner. Then add the cooked rice to the skillet, and mix it all together. Then add the soy sauce & garlic powder to taste. (if u use real garlic, u cook it with the veggies).
(You could substitute thin noodles for the rice also, which takes only 3 min to cook)And add roasted sesame seeds for some crunch.

I love asian food, and theres no restuarants at all near where i live. Theres a chinese place, but they serve more american then chinese food! Its really annoying. And I hate chopping vegetables, but i think its worth it in the end. lol Especially when your hungry.

@ Monika: I make a corn & beans recipe too! (mines more like a chili tho) But i didnt know they released nutrients together. That explains why it tastes so good. lol

I was going to recommend 'vegetarian times' as well! lol
I was subscribed to their magazine for a year, and i ate some of the best food ever... and i think their website is free. (i really need to re-subscribe to them).
They have an amazing "white pizza" w/ broccoli/cheese/mushrooms. Best pizza i ever ever ate. And u can buy pre-made pizza dough in packs at walmart (i use them a lot).

I eat mostly asian dishes too. Rice w/ stirfry veggies, vegetable curry w/ beans... things like that. And i made them all up! ITs not that hard once u get used to it. I recommend buying lots of asian sauces and spices, and experimenting. :) And try new foods.

    Worms from Eating Raw Fish

Started over 1 year ago · Last post about 1 year ago ·
this is (one reason) why im practically vegan. I dont have to deal with that crap anymore. lol
I think you'll be fine since you threw it back up. And didnt eat much to begin with. And almost ALL restaurant foods (no matter what they say) are not fresh, theyre frozen. So theres a slim chance it had any bugs in it.

btw 'Monsters inside me' scares the fuck out of me. lol i cant watch that show. XD I watched that fish episode too, where some stupid guy ate undercooked fish from a pond, and almost died. Its scary.

    vegetarian chit chat

I mostly make everything with indian/asian ingredients too.

Rawr: I also make veggie stirfry with sweet chili sauce! XD Thats my go-to recipe cuz its so quick/easy. I usually chop up whatever veggies i have on hand, add noodles with it, and soy/teriyaki sauce also.

I dont like most faux-meat things. The texture grosses me out (too close to real meat blegh). The only thing i really eat are vegan hotdogs. I cut them up and put them in EVERYTHING. lol Most of them are smokey flavored (which is SOOO good). I recently put it on top of pizza. *drools*

I made that cold pizza too in high school cooking class. lol XD

    Ice Cream

Started almost 3 years ago · Last post over 2 years ago ·
When i was in 6th grade i went to a friends birthday party, and at night her dad made us handmade ice cream churned in an old ice-bucket. OMG it was soooooo good. I can still taste it! lol (& that was freakin ages ago)
Ive never made my own ice cream, but its on my to-do list. I'm just afraid its not gonna be as good as i remember lol. Curned in the vintage ice cream bucket. *drools on computer*

My favorite ice cream is Ben & Jerrys Cherry Garcia.
I'm gonna have to try vegan ice cream now since i stopped drinking milk this year. XD
