Graduation Gift for a GUY! HELP!

You could probably make these cuff links with polymer clay or shrink plastic: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31xNDkpiwHL._SY300_.jpg
I've also seen circuit board phone cases for sale, but perhaps it'll be less dangerous to use printed paper to look like a circuit board and this tutorial from epbot: http://www.epbot.com/2011/10/diy-custom-iphone-cover.html
You could probably adapt this http://online.findgift.com/gift-ideas/polluted-drinking-glasses-pid-373576/ into something just as geeky and probably a bit more relevant with dollar store glasses, stencils, and a tutorial like this: http://www.theyummylife.com/etched_glass_tutorial
You could also use one of the many sceen printing/T-shirt stenciling tutorials on CO+K to make a knock off of something like this: http://www.cafepress.com/mf/25064882/grounded_tshirt?CJAID=10463747&CJPID=3123248&CJSID=my-gift-ideas-for-engineers&CJURL=http://www.cafepress.com/+grounded_light_tshirt,210147229&utm_content=10463747&utm_medium=affiliate&PID=6673042&utm_campaign=none&utm_source=cj&utm_term=2047890
Or...a bit like Syeyon's idea with using food, you could make a bento box that looks like a circuit board (rice with a single big square of green seaweed and details made in cheese)
or maybe just a big craft kit organizer box (or DIY your own organizational system with wood or cardboard, you could even paint or decoupage all the little parts that go in each compartment) full of salvaged/scrap electronics parts (like LED's and circuit boards and soldering materials)
Hopefully that helps....all the engineers I know, even if they do sometimes keep to themselves, are all really outgoing and many are active in K-12 outreaching programs like SWE or a robotics program created by Tau Beta Pi

How Can I Make Yarn Curl - Like Curly Hair
Started 3 months ago · Last post 2 months ago ·
I've used Justine's technique to make curly yarn hair for a cornhusk doll, but If you want larger curls, perhaps a small curling iron and plastic based yarn?

Definitely a Ravenclaw. My elementary school teacher used to have a Hogwarts themed summer daycare program, and would even sort us all into houses and count up House points based on tasks like picking up after snack time and lunch, or winning 'Quidditch' games (not the official version played by a lot of colleges...more like field hockey played with broom-shaped sticks and a soccer ball with a small yellow bouncy ball snitch flying through the court, and beach ball bludgers...I was seeker :D). Even though she sometimes sorted the same people into different houses each year, I always ended up in Ravenclaw. After Luna came into the books, I felt better about never being a Gryffindor (for some reason, she would always put SOOOO many people into Gryffindor, only slightly less in Hufflepuff and Slytherin, and only a few people in Ravenclaw). With your description, I'd say she was right, though...10 years later, I fit the Ravenclaw description now more than ever.

books to read

EpicVegie!: It's so ironic that you have both Tamora Pierce and Twilight, since she's written on livejournal and said in interview on why she dislikes it, but YES, Tammy Pierce books are THE BEST!
There's also Nancy Springer's Rowan Hood series about Robin Hood's daughter, and Enola Holmes about Sherlock Holmes younger sister and her adventures in hiding from her brothers (it focuses a lot on class and gender issues in the Victorian Era and how Enola and her runaway mother deals with them).
I've also read first Daughters of the Sea book by Kathryn Lasky, but that was years ago (I liked Guardians of Ga'Hoole back in elementary school). It was about a girl who discovers she's a mermaid, and also goes a bit into social class issues (since she's an orphan and a serving girl for a rich family).
And of course, the original Sherlock Holmes series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Oh, and also Gerald Morris's A Squire's Tale series based off of the King Arthur Legends :)

No fantasy D:
I really like Sold and Purple Heart by Patricia McCormick. Sold is about a young Nepalese girl from a rural community sold into prostitution in India. I never really thought about human trafficking until reading that book. It isn't so much the story but the way the author makes you want to learn more and do your own research and figure out how you can help expose the problematic business of human trafficking that I find it great.
I remember reading someone complaining about the 'American Hero' perspective of the story, since the characters tended to see Americans as their saviors for trying to sneak condoms and other forms of birth control to the prostitutes if they couldn't take them away all together, but...since it's the media that the girls are exposed to while at the brothel making them see Americans as the way they are, and since it's in the perspective of a young girl who only knows so much because of the world she's been forced into, I find the portrayal accurate.
Purple Heart is about a soldier who wakes up injured with slight amnesia in Iraq, and the internal conflicts he faces with the robotic life of a soldier, as well as having the natural human impulses to be compassionate and having emotions (having met and become friends with some of the local children in the place he was stationed at before the disaster that caused his injuries).
If you like Phantom, Sherlock Holmes is also great (is it weird, as much as I like the new adaptations for it, I love the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories and Jeremy Brett tv show versions of it more?)!

I don't really think it's like pinterest at all. Like Monika, I mostly use it for mostly politics. I'm an intern for a progressive multicultural org at my school, so as of lately we've been campaigning for our senate candidates. Honestly, I've only ever used it for school clubs and orgs and communicating with people/publicizing for events/panels/rallies/meetings/etc., even while in high school. A lot of people treat it as a blog and post about every second of their lives, though...
edit: I forgot, it's useful for free/cheaper textbooks :P

Thanks everyone! I think I'll try the toothpaste method. It's for cleaning a flute. I know I'm not suppose to attempt at cleaning it at all, but my friend doesn't want to pay $50-$100 for cleaning a bit of rust off the head joint, which is a relatively clear space away from keys (....right? I hope nothing goes wrong...)

Piercing s
Started 3 months ago · Last post about 1 month ago ·
...I thought Korean ages were adding one to the "international" age, or something like that since it's considered as 1 during the age most other people consider as 0 (or count by months)....but either way, it doesn't matter how old you are when you get your ears pierced. I think I was slightly younger than you when I first got my ears pierced at a mall (which I had no problems afterwards with)...but I only have one piercing for each ear. My friend, who has multiple piercings, goes to a tattoo/piercing store. My parents made sure to get gold earrings even though they were more expensive to avoid infections.
edit: I believe they were gold plated or something :P I was only 10 so couldn't really remember. They were just really persistent in not getting cheap metal.

hmmm.....usually when I work on ceramics or other 3D art I just make rough sketches from the top view, at least 2 side views if it doesn't have rotational symmetry, and maybe some close ups of how I want specific things to look (key word being ROUGH)...then I start working and see where it goes (especially with ceramics...I'm horrible at controlling natural clay)...what material are you making your doorstop out of?

The only easy thing I could think of are felt adipose...or maybe a decoupage River's Song Journal...or maybe just a notebook inside a faux leather covering for a journal to make the journal of impossible things?

Robotics?

Thanks!
Hayley S: Ummm.....I guess since I just went from an underserved high school to a university with one of the top science programs, so I feel behind? My last year of high school a bunch of us were hinting that our new Science Club should start robotics, but no one was really interested until this year, and since I live closest among those still involved in helping them get started...
Monika Gottindottir: Luckily it's an introductory course that a lot of engineers from schools without any robotics/computer programs take...they said you can be a bum on the street and they'll teach you everything you need to know to mentor high school students. It's a program sponsored by big companies like Google, Siemens, Zipcar, and Agilent (which I find pretty cool, since Agilent offered my high school the opportunity to do research, too), so...money isn't really an issue...and my dad worked as a technician so I know some stuff about electronics and I did help out during a circuitry lesson for 2nd graders once (...I learned some basics 10 yrs ago in elementary school).
I'm tired of complaining (myself and other people from my high school now in college) about sucky unequal science programs across my state, my country, the world. I want to actually do something about it, even if it's something as small as mentoring other underserved high school students.

Robotics?
Started 5 months ago · Last post 5 months ago ·
So....I recently joined a robotics mentorship program at school....
Problem? I have NO experience in robotics at all! Except a quick lesson on soldering from my dad last summer....
I know that they're going to teach us everything we need to teach the high school students, but anyone have any stories? Experiences? Anything to tell me a bit more about what I'm getting myself into?

Unfortunately no..I didn't really get into the historian part of science club until a bit later in the semester (since....I was secretary and we had another person who was historian, but he wasn't at lunchtime meetings that often...and I didn't have my own camera).but the tutorial we used to make them is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUSTXUis_ys
My friend has the Halloween one! He was using it as an example when we were making them (since he's president of science club and had to buy the parts and plan the entire lesson)....I'm kinda sad now...I went to SF today and someone wanted to go check out a toy store, and I didn't notice the huge display of hexbugs until we were leaving :P

Now I want one too! I love the constellations and how some of them look like they have Galifreyan written on them. I remember we made our own at our high school science club last year out of toothbrushes and cell phone vibration motors :)

Can you shrink acrylic yarn?
Started 5 months ago · Last post 5 months ago ·
I'd say no as well...at least, not much. I made a bag out of acrylic yarn once with a cotton stripe, then washed it...the cotton part shrank a bit, but there didn't seem to be any difference for the acrylic yarn part of the bag.

I randomly bought a cookie wool felt kit at Daiso last week....when I started working on it, I was afraid I'd freak out my new room mate because it looked like hairballs for the first few hours...
I play piano...uh....THREE!

Recycled boxes...I have so many boxes within boxes within boxes....all of them are old salad boxes and Amazon boxes...and mooncake box tins for my finished clay charms. If you're working with clay you could also get a tile or cutting board to work on so it's pretty easy to transport.

Problems, problems, and more problems!

SJSU? My friend goes there for civil engineering :)
I, like you, didn't really try out stuff until late into high school (except music....my high school was a sort of arts superpower but wasn't really good for other programs)...
I guess, no matter what you decide to major in, it doesn't necessarily determine exactly what type of career you get.
I'm a first year environmental science major now, but I'm interested in minoring engineering (because...I like to craft, hence MAKE stuff)....but with my major, even though it seems like it sounds like I'm limited myself to science, I found out there SO many different paths I could take: business, engineering, law, policy, research, or even some combination of a few things. I could even go into the arts, like.....working on science TV programs since that's how I kinda found out I loved things that were in a fuzy area of the hard and soft sciences (...or, I guess the most random career I've heard was "sparkling winemaker" ...apparently an alumni at my school became one and my college decided that it was important enough to include in the careers of alumni list, hahahaha! And science not fun? I've had professors and TA's (is that what you call them? My school's a special snowflake and we call them GSI's) who've traveled and worked with people as well as out in nature in Malaysia, China, Ecuador, etc. to do research! Another professor often goes to third world countries (especially one country in South America and another in Africa, I can't remember which ones at the moment), sometimes with students, and they get to work in the field actually with the people there to figure out water sanitation issues. And history, what about archaeology? You'll get to discover things about people who existed so many years ago, and find things that haven't been touched in hundreds, thousands of years! Perhaps it's just the thrill of finding something that no one has ever discovered before that excites me, or getting to help others make the world a better place...
At the beginning of the year, I really did want to transfer majors to engineering just for job security (and, again, because I like MAKING stuff....), but after actually talking to advisers and upper classmen and professors and graduate students, I feel a lot more comfortable with what I've chosen to major in.
I guess the only thing I could say is to still just try out new stuff, talk to professors, talk to advisers, talk to more experienced students already declared with a set major, and see what they do and if anything interests you. Even if their work doesn't SPECIFICALLY interest you but you're kinda interested in the field, ask if they know anything about what you're actually interested in. Pretty likely they'll have colleagues that actually are doing stuff you'll be interested in, and you'll have more chances to get to see what you like :)

Just a hello kitty cupcake with peppermint hot chocolate charm...it's a bit of a joke between my friends...our birthdays are 2 days apart and on my 16th birthday we didn't have a 7am class (the teacher canceled without telling us), so we went to the gas/petrol (?...I'm American, so....gas?) station next to my school and she bought a donut with Christmas colored sprinkles and treated it like a b-day cake along with peppermint hot cocoa :)

Vicky Ninja, saymynameangelapayne: Dr. Who's one of the main shows that got me really into science (along with Design Squad, Nature, NOVA, National Geographic...) and building things (hence, engineering :D). I love how so much of the stuff on the set is all handmade from random stuff that's just lying around
Devilish Angel: We should be best friends! I'm an environmental science major now, and for some time wanted to be a biologist of aquarist at the Monterrey Bay Aquarium...until an overload of biology in high school (3 yrs!) killed bio for me :P ...I still have no idea what I want to do with my major, but...I have a over a year to decide what I want to focus on...it's just so very broad!
