Start with the biggest items and work down to the smallest. By that I mean start maybe with putting clothes away, in wash basket, etc. They're pretty big so you see the difference really quickly which would hopefully motive to do the next thing. Straighten out bedding early on too as that's quick and is instantly satisfying.
Put music on - I always find I get more done with music on.
Tidy things that are interesting last, eg. magazines - if you're anything like me you end up reading them! :)

my whole house explodes on a regular basis 'cause I have an extremely messy husband and two small children. I don't like cleaning, and I'm not a psychotic neat freak, but I do like having a nice neat house - for the three seconds it lasts, anyway.

First prioritize. Address whatever's making the biggest mess. Sort it into laundry baskets and put away the contents of one at a time. Have a trash bag handy so you can immediately toss trash, or if it's clothes or something that's making you crazy, just toss it in to put in the bin. Like Kitkat said, biggest first. Once there's nothing on the floor, it's way easier as well as a lot less daunting. Make sure you dust and vacuum the second you get everything off the floor, or you lose motivation. Well, I do. hahaha

I have the same problem. I live in a small house with my husband and two boys, aged 6 and 15. Unfortunately it seems that all 3 males are allergic to housework so it's left up to me. The easiest thing I find when I'm doing my housework is to make a list of everything that needs doing. Oh and by the way I'm a list a holic, if you can make lists of it, I do it lol. When I do this though I list everything, instead of writing clean the lounge I will itemise it all to, pick up toys, pick up shoes, dust tv unit, wipe tv unit down, organise books, sweep floor, mop floor etc. Then after I'm finished each job I cross it off my list. Not sure if this will help you but it works for me :D Good Luck!

If I have a messy room it works best for me to get everything that is not in place out of the room so I can clean it. I just dump it temporarily in another room. Just the sight of that tidy room makes me start working away the pile of mess too.

Sug, I cannot believe they are coming to check your house. What about privacy???
