I'm naturally dark and have tried bleaching my hairinthe past tosee what it'd look like, however, i went ginger! Somy sister is a hair dresser and when her boss was away i went in to get my hair done for free before Leeds festival. I wanted to try bleached blonde again and i though it'd workas hardressers have the peoper stuff. she used the strongest they do, added heat (which is meant to develop it) and had blonde roots....but everywhere else ginger!! so i had purple on the top. the thing is with bright colourrs they need re-doing every week or so (which is a pain!) which meant by the endof each week i was turning ginger!
just in the process of dying it black now for my new job. hope it covers all the purple!

Lol I haven't had problems with dye not doing anything, but I've had problems with it coming out a completely random colour.. Once, my hair was a darkish brown and I wanted to dye it a dark blonde, and it came out ORANGE! But as in the colour of a carrot.. That was really bad.. Then I was stuck with my hair like that for a week! At least it was in the holidays but still..

i love a hair challenge...definetly dont buy at any grocery store. stick with Sallys beauty supply if possible. if you ever need help, it looks like there are a few of us retired cosmetologists here.

well, i now have pink under tone and a few pink sreaks in front. i used both splat and manic panic both in different shades of pink. Still upset that my hair isnt white but this looks good too!!

Oh ive had my hair go orange from black before.. then it went green from that orange. which worked for me cuz i like wacky colors!! but its not so good at work.. boss people dont like it.

Splat is a good company im using there pink berry to do my hair this time around. (had a bunch in the bathroom already) but the thing with splat is it will damage your hair a little more than manic panic will. i use both brands and i make my own super conditioner just for these!!

for anyone trying to go blonde from dark..
heat really does help alot. i dye my hair all the time and ive found that when i choose to heat it up it works better.

Hmmm why didnt i just go ahead and do that the first time 0.o im silly.

aww lolly. i would try dying your hair brown to get it used to the pigmets. this way it will cover up that nasty fadded mess. every once in a while i have to do that. some people have wonderful hair and hair dye has no effect but if it let you dye it and still fadded to blonde then you CAN dye your hair just have to get stronger stuff. I suggest going to sallys and asking someone there, explain your hair issue and they will help you get the right type of stuff. they are always very helpful there.

If you like to have blond hair, and you have before dark color, (1) you most too removed dark color, then apply blinsurance color, you most be carefully, if you like to have a darker color, like from blond to blue or brown, you should doo deposit first, like orange, wash your hair, no shampo no conditions just wash color out, then dry hair 100% and apply color read. Or Browne, blue, you will se result, it's work good lack.

Once dyed my hair purple, it was originally dark brown so i had to bleack it, looked great at first then after two days (without washing it because the instructions said not to) my hair had turned green ;'( ...but maybe try bleaching it first? Happy

This may or may not be relevant, but I am a natural blonde, and dyeing my hair any color should be fairly easy, right? It used to be. Until about a year ago. Hair color will no longer take on my hair unless I bleach it first. It doesn't get any lighter than what it is, but for some reason it stimulates my hair to take the color. I could give you a more scientific answer if I researched it. Perhaps your hair is like mine and you should try bleach first, then the chosen color.

I admit I didn't read all the replies, but thought I would throw this in there. It could help someone.

---ETA: Woah. Resurrected thread! Will keep this here, just in case.

brown hair wont dye lighter... usually only darker - if you want blond you'll have to bleach then dye

Attempted to dye my hair medium brown last night and it looks like I'm one of them chocolate and lime sweets!! My hair was previously blue (lagoon blue from directions colours) as I'm getting past my teens I've been finding it very hard to get a job with my hair colour, unfortuanetly my hair colour wasn't professional enough to be accepted by most work places so I thought to stop all the hassle and complaints I would dye my hair a more natural colour, but it's not worked!! It's a hair disaster I cannot face going outside with! Any suggestions why it didn't work?? I managed to cover all the blue with the dye and was looking like it was taking to all my hair but as soon as it came to washing it out I've been left with blue patchy streaks. Sad
