Fabric.. Fabric... Fabric?

I'll be making a ladybug backpack as a Christmas present. I've never tried this before so I'm starting early in case I mess up (or rather, when I mess up XD) But now I'm kinda stumped on fabrics. I need something durable, but also soft-ish and easily stitched because I'll probably be sewing it by hand as my machine hates me, so nothing like leather.. Well, let me describe it.

It'll be a circular backpack made of black fabric. There will be two wings made of red fabric, and the face will probably be embroidered. The straps will either be custom made, or I may be able to find a cheap backpack at a charity shop and salvage straps from that.. I'm hoping to have it zip open and closed, and I'm looking for it to be at least 9x9" but probably no more then 12x12"... Oh, and I'd also like it to be lined and machine washable.

Do I have too much on my wishlist? I just want it to be a good present but I've never actually made a present before so.. Im so nervous x_x

that's going to be very complicated... You'll need a tough stiff fabric to keep the shape... Does it need to be a backpack? cause you could quite easily make a small handbag/ messenger style bag.. Anyway, whatever you do I'd be inclined to make it out of a vinyl coated fabric though, making sure you get a frame on the inside... Good luck, anyway, sorry I can't be more help xx

I would use duck cloth, it is fairly durable and can be hand dyed to whatevercolor you want it to be
