How do you get yourself up in the morning?

I'm finding it really hard to wake up and I just walk around like a zombie in the morning.
What tips and tricks do you guys use to get yourself up?

I don't really have any tricks, I am groggy and my eyes are glued shut for the first few minutes, but once I'm washed and dressed I am usually better. I have to say I do feel more uplifted in the mornings since getting our cat :D I have to do all her things, like her food and that and give her loads of rubs.
I don't have any advice really :( sorry. Do you eat brekkie? I find that wakes me up nice and reading the paper :) Although maybe thats coz mine is in a foreign language so I have to wake up to focus lol
Have a quick cold shower! brrr
Hope someone has something better for you, it's awful being groggy and sluggish in the mornings :(

Yeah, it's awful. I've always had a big problem with getting myself up, but I'm quite bad at falling asleep too. I don't usually have breakfast because I'm always running late, but I'll try and fit it in tomorrow. Eurrrghh, I hate mornings :(

Coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.

Well if you are not getting proper sleep, then thats probably where to start :) Fix your getting to sleep problems and waking up is that much easier. I know it's easier said than done, but setting yourself a bedtime is a good way to try. To get my 8hrs I should be in bed now, but that's not gonna happen lol
    Mornings should be banned :P

A sprint to the bus usually does the trick.

Nigella Lawson had this recipe for a wake-em-up smoothie which I'm going to try tomorrow. It looked yum!

im so bad at waking up! what i have to do now (and even that doesn't work all the time) is put the alarm clock at the other side of the room and at full blast!
i then have to get up put it on snooze every 10 mins for an hour then finally drag myself out of bed!

i hate waking up soooo much! i think it's because i love staying up at night and get more creative !

I'm not a morning person. All four of my parents are, counting steps, so it's not genetic or learned really.

I, too, have to keep the alarm clock on the other side of the room. Then I spend a few minutes reading in the loo, then have coffee or tea with something little to eat. I try - try - to have something balanced with protein and carbs. Usually peanut butter toast.

Then I go to work half asleep...

Wake up...in the morning? What is this you speak of? I get out of bed, shower, dress, and drive to work. Then somewhere around 11:00 I become coherant.

Back in college I used to rub ice cubes on my eyes and then my face. That worked.
Now I find going to sleep an hour earlier helps out.

Having something tasty to eat sometimes helps but it's a hit or miss sometimes so that's not reliable.

I recently got 2 baby rabbits and they need to be cleaned out everyday and I do it in the morning so I know I just have to get up because they're my responsibility and I don't want them walking around in their poos in the morning. If you already have a pet try and either do their cleaning, walking or playing right away in the morning. If you don't have a pet you could get a small one like a mouse, rat, guinea pig or a dwarf rabbit and do their cleaning in the morning. I like to have a cup of tea at the end of cleaning out my rabbits as a reward. Getting a pet though might be a little too drastic for this situation!

Yeah, I couldn't really take on a pet at the moment - I have a little house mouse that comes out to say hi sometimes, but that's it for now!

There's this pretty cool thing I got taught in psychology.
You lie flat on your back and slowly tense the muscles in your toes. Then you tense the muscles in all of your feet. Then your lower legs and feet. You move on like that till you can tense your entire body, but you have to really focus on what you're doing. It really helps wake you up =)

Although I always forget and hit the snooze button haha

I don't like sleep, I go to bed late and wake up early I know it's not good for me but I can't just lie in bed.My sister on the other hand can sleep for 24hrs straight (she has once) and she says showers are best thing to wake your self up with or if you dont have time washing your face or sucking on an ice cube (I have no idea how she discovered that one)

my alarm plays my fave CD at the time, so i just let it play 2 songs, then my cat usually starts meowing for food so i get up

so a trick? um....let ur alarm play for like 2 mins longer, makes the BIGGEST difference, actually

and cold water on your face that wakes me up good

Until recently, I'd always been a morning person; waking up really early.
But then I started going to bed later and later, and now I'm not any more :(
But once I get up, I find it fairly easy to wake up.

When I was reallly young (maybe 7 - 10) I used to wake up at 6, then wake up everyone else in my house. I was responsible :) haha. but now I can't even get myself up. I have three alarms that go off a different times, but no motivation to care. School at 7am is just tooo early.

My cat sleeps at the end of my bed, so she usally wakes me up with headbutt "kisses" in the face to go get her breakfast.

Wow, I feel so alone. I'm an early bird and so is my husband. Our kids were horrible on getting up in the morning. We were so desperate to getting our kids on the right track we tried something new. We read that the local Chumash indians would have a tribal ceremony. They would gather all the tribe early before the sun rise on the morning of a solstic and the entire tribe would watch the sun rise. From that point on they would naturally all wake up at the same time.

Well, that worked pretty good for awhile... until the kids started staying up late doing homework till the wee hours of the next day.

We go to bed at 8:00 every night and get up at 3:30 every morning. The dog and cat hear my alarm go off and get noisy for food. My husband works at 5 so we eat breakie together and sometimes play a hand of Gin Rummy before getting into the shower. Coffee and Chai Latte, poached eggs, toast and blueberry juice and a shower. That works for us, but it's mostly due to going to bed so early I'm sure.

Drink alot of water before retiring for the night! The horrible urge to go to the bathroom in the AM will get you up PRONTO!

My scottish terrier won't let me sleep in. She has a charm on her "princess" collar and she comes into the bedroom and shakes to make the charm make noise. She'll keep it up until I am up.

for sure! drink LOTS OF WATER then as rumor has it you will have a urge to go pee earlier in the morning

I have always been a night owl but this past summer I started getting up early so that I wouldn't waste any of my precious warm weather (I was living in Montana at the time and you never knew when it would turn cold again). Anyways, in order to "train" myself to be a morning person, I would tell myself that for every morning I woke up without any difficulties and with a postive outlook on being up before any person in their right mind would volunteer to do then I would treat myself to something special that day. The problem is that you have to be just as willing to punish yourself if you wake up grumpy as you are to reward yourself for being a "good girl". Think small in the beginning (a trip to your favorite sushi bar for lunch or an extra long swim in the lake). Then you can gradually make bigger and better rewards (a secretive jaunt to the afternoon matinee to watch that silly "Hollywood movie" with the lame story line but beauiful people). Maybe if you are a grump that day you still have to go see the lame "Hollywood movie" but this time you have to admit it to all of your friends. Ha! Hope my idea helps!

I have to agree COFFEE, COFFEE, COFFEE! I love to stay up really late, but I hate having to get up early with my little ones. So I get up, drink my coffee, get them off to school, do some things around the house and with my 2 little guys and then we NAP!!

I'm so terrible at getting up. I only get up if someone's coming to pick me up or I have to be somewhere for other people or an appointment. I've been getting worse and only getting up at 8.15 when I have to leave at half past! So I keep being late for college. I've put my alarm clock further away so I have to move far to turn it off. You'd think when I did this I'd just think 'ok might as well get up now' but nooo.

    I need this! http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2005/mar/26/sciencenews.theguardianlifesupplement
