Vinegar bath for fabric

I bought lovely fabric today which will be turned into a dress as soon as possible. The seller told me to that I should make a bath with water and vinegar and let the fabric in it for a night, then wash it with cold water. It would be better for the colours, he said. I have never done it before and I wonder if it is really necessary.

So my question is: Have you ever treated your fabric with vinegar before using it for further crafts? What is your experience?

I never heard of soaking brand new fabric in vinegar before !!! Did they say WHY you need to do this ??? Vinegar is acid, so I would worry about soaking overnight !!! You should get a second opinion from someone else in the store ! I have heard of WASHING fabric, but not soaking in vinegar.
Love the fabric, by the way !!!

It makes sense in the fact that when dying fabric you use vinegar or salt to help the color stay. Also you use vinegar to soften fabric.

I've never heard this, but I've never really experimented much with dyes and printed fabrics. I ADORE that fabric though! I wish I could find something like that where I live!
