Holy crap I can't understand this pattern!!!

Maybe I have overstepped my abilities and took on a project too hard, but I swear it seemed easy at the time. Doesn't it always?? Anyway I have this pattern for a shawl here: http://www.stitchnationyarn.com/Patterns/sidewalk-shawl.html, and I can't understand some of it. If I can just understand the parts about the ch, I can finally get a move on with this project. Yet, alas, I cannot. What I cannot understand begins in the parentheses. I have already finished the first shell.

Here is the sample: Row 1: Shell in 5th ch from hook (beginning ch counts as dc, ch 1 here and throughout), ch 2, skip next 3 ch, sc in next ch, [ch 3, skip next 2 ch, sc in next ch] 5 times, ch 2, skip next 3 ch, Shell in next ch, ch 1, skip next ch, dc in last ch, turn—2 Shells, 5 ch-3 spaces, and 2 ch-2 spaces.

I think the 1st set of () are just telling you that the 1st Chain, of your upcoming Chain2 will count as if it was a Double Crochet from here on out, when you Chain2 after the Shell.

does that make sense? What else are you getting stuck on?

"Row 1: Shell in 5th ch from hook (beginning ch counts..."
What's in the parenthesis is is telling you that the 5 chains you skipped count as a dc (double crochet stitch). ^^ LOL just as Pamela <3 explained. LOL
