Help with denim overalls/dungaree skirt

Hi! A while ago I bought this denim dungaree skirt (not sure if this is the right word for it, do they call them overalls in America? Anyway it looks kinda like this - http://resources.shopstyle.com/sim/bb/89/bb89f8a30534c34b94cb19a266216a3e/next-kids-clothes-denim-mini-skirt-dungaree.jpg) and need some advice on how to make it a bit nicer. Its too big around my hips and I would like it a bit shorter but really I want something a bit more interesting. Any advice?

I see ruffles in your near future... ruffles are easy and make everything fabulous... hee hee... as far as altering it, i wish you luck, i'm still perfecting my own altering ability. and it depends on your definition of "nicer" as well... me interesting means adding 70's style fabric with bright and bold colors and patterns... if you're talking organza and silk... um... i'm of noooo help ;-) GOOD LUCK!
