    Granny Square problem, please help!

Started over 1 year ago · Last post 11 months ago · Displaying all 7 Post
When I try to make granny squares they never turn out square :( I follow the instructions correctly as far as I know, sometimes it goes a bit square but when I do more it loses its shape.

I've not really made any granny squares but I have made other square items and things that need regular sides. Could this be a problem with your tension? You are getting looser or tighter as you go? Try to make stuff in a oner so you are not putting up and putting down all the time.

Either that or watch what you are doing with your turning chain. Could you be adding extra stitches at the end of the row (I used to do this). Try using a stitch marker so you can see where the end is.

    Hope this helps.

Have you dampened and pinned them to dry? That's called blocking and may solve the issue. If it's a very noticeable issue on a larger square, are you flipping the square and "reversing direction" for lack of a better term on the different rows?

@Lacey, I'm not flipping it, and I haven't made a large square yet, they go round from the start, I think the most I have done are 6 um rows from the start outwards

Try blocking a square and see if that helps. Spray your square (damp, not soaking) and gently stretch and pin into the shape you want. sometimes that can make the difference.

It's difficult to tell what could be going wrong and causing it to mis-shape without seeing it. I used to have a problem with granny squares but I reduced the chains down from 3 chains in a row to 2 chains and that made the squares neater. But it's hard to tell depending on the pattern your using.

I usually have to make the stitches in the corners bigger and it helps. As my granny square gets larger I tend to make smaller stitches and its a long explanation for a simple statement. Make your corners a bit looser. And perhaps chain between your shells (at least I think that's what the trip dcs are called xP)
