    Worms from Eating Raw Fish

Started over 1 year ago · Last post about 1 year ago · Displaying all 17 Post
Let me start this off by saying I'm a HUGE germaphobe, especially when it comes to food.I'm terrified of bugs and seemingly harmless microbial organisms that cause diease and death. So, I suppose it's fitting that this WOULD happen to me.

I don't eat meat but I used to eat fish (until today). I've always had an issue with eating something that once lived. It just seems disgusting to me but for whatever reason I was ok with eating salmon.

Today, I hadn't eaten anything but yogurt this morning and was Fungry by the time we got to Logan's Loser Road House. I ordered salmon. I usually have this habbit of inspecting food before I eat it.
I'll cut up and pick through all of it and smell to make sure that it's safe to eat bc I don't trust strangers with my food.
Today I was so hungry I skipped my usual routine (regretfully)

I swallowed about 3 bites before I saw the rest of the Fish was raw, cold and slimey!
F-ing Disgusting! I was so pissed, bc I ate that and raw fish can give you worms. I've seen stories on Monsters inside me.

Just so happens the Manager strolls around to ask how everything was. I showed him my plate and said disgusting. He looked repulsed by it and apologized asking if he could get me anything.

I asked that he bring out the idiot who "cooked" my food so I could kick him in the face. I told him about the show Monsters inside me and that I was afraid of getting worms.

He went to the back to talk to the moron who "cooked" my food. The jack ass told him they were backed up so he "dropped it" so it'd get out on time. He sent it out knowing it was raw! What an idiotic M****R F****R!

I went to the rest room and threw up.I hope everything came out. I'm still afraid of worms!

This incident further reinforces my completely logical fear of food in general. Especially, when combined with lazy, idiot "cooks".

My question is what is the likelihood of me getting worms after throwing up raw fish?

Probably not very likely. :S I wouldn't worry too much about it, you didn't eat a large amount and def got it out of your system fast! lol, I would totally keep your receipt and jot down the managers names. Just in case something does end up happening. You should probably have a few martinis to double check there are no worms in your tummy, lol J/K! That cook does sounds like an ass though, Oh and you should call whatever organization is in charge of restaurant related illness. Like the Department of Health! Let them know what the cook knowingly served you. They may have other complaints against that place.
So sorry you have a terrible experience! I hate when shut like that happens :( I hope you went home and had an ah-mazing salad! Yum!

If the fish was frozen before, the worms would have been killed off by extreme cold temperatures.

Wow that is horrible! I'd do what pammerz says and report them! its discusting. I think its highly unlikely you'll get worms as you've get it out of your system very quick. If it makes you feel better and just as a precaution take some worming tablets to put your mind at rest x

Thanks y'all. I definitely did contact the health dept. about that jackass. I am permanently scarred from eating fish at all. To avoid any possibility of being in another situation like that again, I will never ever EVER be eating any kind of fish, again.

I'm willing to bet the manager fired him on the spot when he admitted to knowing sending out raw fish. I know my boyfriend wouldn't have wasted anytime getting rid of someone who did that.

I don't think the biggest risk would be worms (things like that make TV shows with 'monster' in the title because they are extreme and rare) but non sushi grade raw fish is extremely risky for food poisoning. Which is MUCH more likely to make you very ill or even in some people cause death.

Salmon and tuna - of the correct grade- is usually served very rare in the middle in top end restaurants (everyday restaurants would be unlikely to stock that freshness/quality of fish) but it will be ultra fresh and quality controlled. So on the one hand, the risk of parasites is in reality quite low BUT the danger was high for food poisoning; so you should report it.

Hey! raw salmon, as grossed out as it made you, is relatively harmless. You could actually just grab a raw one from a stream and eat it and have very little risk of parasites then, or food poisoning. My husband and I eat sushi all of the time, so sushi=raw fish. But fish usually has to be a certain grade, and as long as it is frozen it would have killed everything, and it being a chain restaurant, I am sure that it was. They are not going to pay for fresh salmon.
There are always RARE situations, but it is very, very unlikely. Mainly I think it just was a gross thing for you to go through since you dislike raw fish. But not anything health related that I would be concerned about.

you proably didnt digest it so it should be ok. even if you do get worms its a simple one tablet to kill them off and then they just move out of your body with other body waste products

this is (one reason) why im practically vegan. I dont have to deal with that crap anymore. lol
I think you'll be fine since you threw it back up. And didnt eat much to begin with. And almost ALL restaurant foods (no matter what they say) are not fresh, theyre frozen. So theres a slim chance it had any bugs in it.

btw 'Monsters inside me' scares the fuck out of me. lol i cant watch that show. XD I watched that fish episode too, where some stupid guy ate undercooked fish from a pond, and almost died. Its scary.

From a professionally trained, licensed chef... you're safe (from worms). While sushi grade is higher quality than what you had, there are minimum safety requirements. The salmon you had would've been IQF or "quick frozen," and there is a rare type of parasite that can survive this but it doesn't occur in salmon. Personally, I never eat salmon cooked past med rare and LOVE nigiri.

It's good to know! Btw what is the name of the rare parasite you're talking about? Also what fish or other animal is it in

I watch that show too. I never want to travel anywhere tropical because of it :/

I have no problems eating meat, beef and lamb I don't mind eating med-well but everything else I have to eat cooked through. I don't care for fish so I never have that problem but recently I've been trying salmon sushi but I really trust the place we go to.

I doubt you got worms from three bites and throwing them up. I wouldn't ever order fish from Logan's though :/ I would have complained to the manager and if they did nothing then call health department and Yelp their ass.

.. i tought i could add my little opinion

i work in a sushi bar.. been for at least 6 years
eat raw fish pretty much every day of every species possible.. never got anything

SOME species of fish are known for this and usually avoided for raw use like codfish and in canada aniway i believe are passed under dome ray to detect them those who dont pass the test are used to make animal food and fertilizer the only one i ever saw in a salmon in my career was in a fish market and stuck on the skin not inside

in every country some amount of non food particle are aloed and expected like bugs, branches, leaves, rodent hair.. this article is about the fda imput on this if you are curious http://www.sixwise.com/newsletters/05/06/29/how_many_insect_parts_and_rodent_hairs_are_allowed_in_your_food.htm

yes i find this nasty.. but it wont stop me from eating peanut butter its just a reality you learn to deal whit when you find out your wine bottle contain a bit more then just grape and whit the thousand of orange squished to make juice there was also a few undesirable bugs to season it

ewww I didn't want to know but I was curious and looked.

Yeah it's like that for most foods like rats in ketchup and stuff
I once heard that the average person consumes 6 spiders in their sleep in their life time. Don't know if that's still true, I heard it when I was a kid but it stuck with me because I'm afraid of spiders XP
