so i have dark brown hair--it is pretty fine/ thin.
I am having an impossible time getting it to grow in length or width.
it hits basically on my shoulders and i just don't know what options i have for styling it.
I'll try any style at this point!

I have the same problem :( I cut my hair really short in the spring and now its grown out to my shoulders, so too long for a short style, but not long enough to really do anything with. My fair is really fine also. Sadly I keep mine pulled up in a low ponytail and use a headband to hold up my bangs. I live in a really humid place, so leaving is down isn't an option. I don't have any good ideas for you, but your not alone! lol

I'm in the middle of growing my hair out, it just got past that shoulder length so now I can wear it down more. I wore my hair in a Gibson tuck a lot (see my tutorial :P) which works better with that length then it does now that my hair is longer.... I also researched different braiding techniques to add something special even when my hair was down or back in a pony tale. My favorites where a waterfall braid, a half dutch, and a bohemian twist.
My hair isn't very thick either so I have to work for volume... teasing is probably the strongest but it can be brutal on your hair so I wouldn't recommend it for every day. What ever you use whether it be a curling iron, hair rollers or brush use a large round barrel; lift the roots and apply hair spray and it will volumize your hair.

My hair is pretty thin too & one time I chopped it into a bob & when it grew out, I did this style often using a bit of volumizer like Monika said :P
That picture isn't of me lol, but it's from this tutorial :)

you can tie your hair into a low ponytail (make sure to leave some strands out to make it look like you meant to be messy because this one will never be perfect) then flip the ponytail up and clip it there
